A Gentleman Bastard Is Still A Bastard

February 3, 2015 by Ale 5 Comments

In a nutshell this is a fantastic, fun ride. It has all the elements of a great modern fantasy: excellent characters, awesome world-building, and a fast-paced, well timed plot that keeps you interested. A lot of Amazon reviewers are comparing Scott Lynch to Mark Lawrence and Patrick Rothfuss, and as a reader of all 3 authors, I feel that Lynch’s Locke and Company are NOTHING like Jorg or Kvothe. While Jorg is a downright bastard (see Kaykay’s Cannonball 6 review) and Kvothe is cocky (see […]

A Devilishly Twisted Dark Fantasy Thriller

January 23, 2015 by chettsgenie 4 Comments

‘Horns’ is the story of a young man who awakens one morning with horns growing out of his head. This man, Ig Perrish, is thought to have killed his girlfriend the year before. The horns seem to have a weird effect on the people he speaks to. He keeps being asked for permission from the people he talks to, to allow them to act out dark desires.First off this is a brilliant story, powerful and thought-provoking. It’s the kind of book that affects your mood […]

Let it go, let it go . . . Oh, Elsa, I wish you were real.

I apologize for the Frozen reference (except that I don’t). “Let it go,” except in a different context, is really the main theme of this book. And it’s not my fault that Frozen has now co-opted that phrase for all time (point of interest: I am not yet sick of the song or the movie because I have carefully limited my exposure, and also I don’t have any children). Faerie After is the final book in the Bones of Faerie trilogy. This review will probably not […]

The Broken Empire Trilogy Book #3

February 17, 2014 by thewheelbarrow 3 Comments

Superb ending to a fantastic trilogy. Mark Lawrence really outdid himself with Emperor of Thorns. I don’t want to give away any spoilers so this will be vague. Emperor of Thorns follows our (anti-) hero Jorg of Renar, NOT Ancrath as he caravans to Vienne. There he is to join other kings and representatives who will vote for a new emperor. The vote takes place every four years and it has been a very long time since the Broken Empire was whole. Jorg intends to […]
