Got my boogie shoes on and ready to go!

Dance Class Volume 12: The New Girl by BeKa

August 20, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The first thing I noticed in my copy of Dance Class Volume 12: The New Girl by BeKa was that several speaking bubbles were empty. I can only assume that this is due to reading this as an e-galley directly from the publisher’s newsletter and therefore, not a finished copy. Because of this, I was not overly thrilled with the plot. However, the 3 comes from the potential of what I was able to read. I think reading the previous volumes of the series would […]

Rosie the Riveter: The Legacy of an American Icon by Sarah Dvojack

Dancing in the Wings by Debbie Allen

May 27, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is “can’t write 250 words for both books, but even if I could they should be together” review time. Both books are for older children up to adults. There is not a lot of traditional adventure or action, but that should not take away from the fact these are strong stories that can be used in the classroom or at home readings. They can be used to women’s history month (though only Rosie has a past, even if she is not officially a “real” […]

Boogie fever, I think it’s going around

How Do You Dance? by Thyra Heder

February 18, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

How Do You Dance? is a modern story about how everyone has their own way of dancing. Some people are graceful, others not so much. Some dance in groups and others alone. But no matter how you dance, just getting out and dancing is the thing to do! Thyra Heder created a clever way to get a child reading as well as a’ movin’ and a’ groovin’! Heder’s book is just a happy book. It is a bout being you and having fun. Along the […]

Let’s Dance

To Dance: Special Edition by Siena Cherson Siegel

November 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

To Dance: Special Edition is a graphic novel by Siena Cherson Siegel and focuses on the author’slife and mostly her life in dance. In several ways, this feels like an abridged version of older edition (though publisher notes say it is expanded). This allows it to be a nice introduction, filled with details but without being overwhelming. You get to see the journey of a dancer from a young age to an adult. You see the passion she had (and has) for dance. You see […]

Jazz Owls: A Novel of the Zoot Suit Riots by Margarita Engle

May 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Get out your drapes and start to jump, leap and swing to the beat! You will Rumba the night away! Jazz Owls: A Novel of the Zoot Suit Riots by Margarita Engle is a prose poetry book that reads like a novel. Each character (and there are several, some named and some just their occupation) has a story to tell about California in the early years of the Untied States time in World War Two. American born sisters, 16-year-old Marisela and 14-year-old Lorena just want […]

Do what you love and you’ll love what you do

December 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While there are introductions to each section of the book, you cannot really read Born to Dance: Celebrating the Wonder of Childhood. This is a coffee table book for kids who love to dance. Not like, love. Also, if you have a gymnastic in your family, this could work as well. The positions some of these people get into, I do not think the Karma Sutra has invented yet! Seriously though, there is a lot going on. Jordan Matter’s photographs are delightful. You see the […]
