The other first Radio City Rockette

She Kept Dancing: The True Story of a Professional Dancer with a Limb Difference by Sydney Mesher and Catherine Laudone

October 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Years ago, my dad (who was a painting contractor) had a client who noticed the t-shirt he was wearing. It was my (knock-off) Rockette t-shirt (my mom did the laundry and didn’t pay attention to the fact that it was not one of my dad’s shirts and put it with his work clothes. I was a bigger teen; my dad a smaller guy). The client informed my dad that A) it was not official and B) did he know she was a Rockette herself? Well […]

Move it and groove it

Tammy The Troll: A Dance in the Forest (Prop-Based Dance Stories for Classroom and Anytime Fun)  by Diana McDermott

September 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently I was given the opportunity to read Tammy The Troll: A Dance in the Forest (Prop-Based Dance Stories for Classroom and Anytime Fun) as an online reader copy which was sent to me by the delightful Terrel (who enjoys letting others know about the Once Upon A Dance books). I was excited to try it as lately I have found some favorite reads from chance encounters with reader copies. Plus, I had enjoyed another book from this company, Sora Searches for a Song: Little Cricket’s Imagination Journey (Dance-It-Out! Creative Movement […]

What’s that sound?

Tapping Feet by Moira Rose Donohue

August 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I really enjoy my job as a staff member of an independent bookstore. You never know what you will find on the shelves (for sale and reader copies, where I found an ARC, Juba! by Walter Dean Myers, that had introduced me to a few names shown here). Or in the emails we receive saying, “Hey we have these reader copies and if you’re interested email me and I’ll send you something.” In early August I had asked for a finished copy of Tapping Feet […]

Some princesses, a prince and a bear go on an adventure

Swan Lake: Quest for the Kingdoms by Rey Terciero

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

cbr15bingo Politics: two rival kingdoms are pitted against each other due to lack of understanding and greed There are way too many references to modern ideas, not to mention Swan Lake and Tchaikovsky in the graphic novel, Swan Lake: Quest for the Kingdoms.  But that is part of its charm for adults. For the 10 and up crowd, it is a funny, interesting story that mixes in friendship and assumptions and sword fights together. Combining all the fantasy and science fiction elements (I can make a […]

Sora Searches for a Song: Little Cricket’s Imagination Journey (Dance-It-Out! Creative Movement Stories) by A Dance, Once Upon

May 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not yet listened to the audio version of Sora Searches for a Song: Little Cricket’s Imagination Journey (Dance-It-Out! Creative Movement Stories) but I am hoping soon. In the meantime, I was able to find an online reader copy. We follow Ballerina Konora as she shows us how to do dance moves. Or how to dance-out the story itself. You can read the story first, so you know the basics, but to the side Konora is stretching, turning, jumping, moving along. Christine Herbert and […]

I want to find the right audience for this book

Boogie in the Bronx! (Barefoot Singalongs) by Jackie Azua Kramer

May 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Unfortunately, Boogie in the Bronx! (Barefoot Singalongs) did not “do it” for me. In the long run, there is nothing wrong with Jackie Azua Kramer’s story, but the elements did not mesh for me. The first issue is I was reading it (via an online reader copy, book is due October 2023) and not having it sung/read to me. I think that will make a big different. The Spanish words will be correctly spoken (even though there is a pronunciation key under the word) and […]
