War can make anyone a refugee.

Hakim's Odyssey: Book 1: From Syria to Turkey by Fabien Toulmé

November 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hakim’s Odyssey: Book 1: From Syria to Turkey by Fabien Toulmé, and translated by Hannah Chute, is a straight forward and complicated read. This is not the usual refugee/displaced person story that we think we know. Usually, we are watching them on boats, trying to escape whatever the tragic events are in their homeland. Names, family and two neat books

Your Name is a Song by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow

The Gifts of Being Grand: For Grandparents Everywhere by Marianne Richmond

November 27, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A short (all of two books) list of picture books follows this paragraph. Wait, is it a list if it is only two? Anyway, both books would be good for gifts to different people. The first one is a great gift for a child and the second, for grandparents. Your Name is a Song talks about how it can be difficult for a child who has a name that is difficult to pronounce. Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow shows how one mother shows her child how beautiful her […]

When you know who Maria Tallchief and Misty Copeland are, but are unsure who other non-white dancers are…..

The Story of Ballerina Raven Wilkinson by Leda Schubert

February 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Trailblazer: The Story of Ballerina Raven Wilkinson is more of a 4.9 rating. I think I wanted a full-length biography and not the medium length picture book Leda Schubert created. However, Schubert does an amazing job of presenting a little-known dancer, woman, African-American and person. If you have a young lady into ballet this would be a good book for them. If you are doing a class about women trailblazers or African-American history this would be a good book to add.  I might even give […]
