Silas Jones and Larry Ott are two sides of a coin in a small Mississippi town. They meet as children, where Larry is the town comic book reading, horror aficionado weirdo and Silas is the new kid – poor, black, and new to country life. They become friends for a time, bonding over proximity, loneliness, and a shared love of nature and horror. Over time, however, Silas moves on to sports and other friends. Fast forward to adulthood, where ‘Scary’ Larry is a pariah because […]
A great (imo) twist that I did not see coming
Ok guys. I consider myself to be pretty intelligent. Like I totally know words, and even how to use them! I can name all of the James Bond movies, and who played Bond in each of them. Additionally, I’m a great Googler. Now that I’ve laid out my case (ooh it’s a legal book – unintentional pun!) for my unparalleled wit, I want to say that I did not see the twist in this story coming. And it wasn’t one of those out of left […]
Never thought a John Grisham novel could make me cry
Becoming a parent (which my wife and I did two years ago) does some strange and unexpected things to your brain. I’ve spent the entirety of my time on this earth identifying with the kid in every parent-child relationship. I’ve always seen myself as the kid. I had no other perspective from which to peer at the world. And then…..it shifted. Given those same parent-child situations, I now see it from the other side. This is such a simple shift in perspective, but there’s a […]
Prison Doesn’t Work – So What Do We Do?
Best for: People interested in what justice could look like. In a nutshell: Author Maya Schenwar – whose sister has been in and out of prison – explores what is wrong with our current system, as well as alternatives. Line that sticks with me: “Isolation does not ‘rehabilitate’ people. Disappearance does not deter harm. And prison does not keep us safe.” Why I chose it: A political podcast I used to listen to interviewed the author. It struck both my husband and I so much […]
Tis the Season to be Bashing! Tra La La La La!
Happy sigh. This is one of my favorite re-reads. I tend to read it around the Christmas season. But seriously. I needed a happy (as it can be) In Death book. It gets to be a bit of a grind to just read about rape and murder in every other book. Memory in Death (In Death #22) is a really good Eve Dallas and Roarke book. We get to spend about equal time with Roarke in this one. And I just sadly realized it’s been […]
Okay Second Book in Miss Fisher’s Murder Series
I think this book is firmly a three star read. We get introduced to Mr. Butler, though in the book series he has a wife. We have Phryne once again being led by her libido. At least she has good deductive reasoning though. Though I will say that whole last act was unnecessary with Phryne and I found myself bored senseless reading about her clothes and how much food she had eaten. She also makes an agreement with one of the culprits in this book […]
