A book worth re-reading

March 13, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

Another contender for favorite book of the year right here. She Rides Shotgun is kind of like an urban crime thriller mashed up with an old school western. Think of True Grit meets Veronica Mars and you’ll come close to the feeling of this book. As a superfan of badass literary girls, it will surprise no one that I enjoyed this immensely. Polly, eleven years old and a bit sheltered, gets picked up from school by her ex-con father unexpectedly one day. Turns out her […]

Only the good die young. Evil seems to live forever.

I’ve gone an read another book that’s made me angry. If there’s one take away message from Chris Johnston and Rosie Jones’ ‘The Family’, it’s that sometimes life is incredibly unjust. Anne Hamilton Byrne, now approaching 100 years old, is currently in palliative care in a nursing home in Melbourne, Australia. She’s only ever been convicted of minor fraud charges, but she’s guilty of so much more. Anne has the honour of being one of Australia’s most notorious cult leaders, serving as the guru and self-professed […]

This was just bad

This book has to be one of the worst I’ve read in a long time – I almost didn’t want to review it, but it’s one of those that you can hate review so easily I couldn’t resist. The premise of this book sounded promising: Las Vegas is a city of contradictions: seedy and glamorous, secretive and wild, Vegas attracts people of all kinds–especially those with a secret to hide, or a life to leave behind. It’s the perfect location for Lester Olsen’s lucrative business. […]

Robbing banks with a twist

January 16, 2018 by KB Leave a Comment

Having just read “The Snowman” I was excited and impatient to read more of Jo Nesbo’s books.  There are many great things about this book, but unfortunately a few things that were a little disappointing. Firstly, the characters as always are great. I absolutely love Harry Hole (the main character) and have become quite defensive of him. Automatically disliking any character that does not treat him with respect. As well as being pleased by any character that does respect him and admires him. But I […]

You Don’t Know From Gritty

L.A. Confidential by James Ellroy OK, well, if you’re looking for a quick little detective romp that makes you feel good about policing in America you REALLY need to look elsewhere. I knew this would be dark going in but man, this book is really dark and pretty graphic. I had to take a few breaks while reading it because it was getting a bit overwhelming. It is also one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. This story is way more […]

Starting the new year off with a new face and an old (violent) dog learning new tricks

January 7, 2018 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Gangsterland had been on my “to read” pile for some time.  I am what I would define as a super fan of the podcast “Literary Disco.” This novel is the newest book by Tod Goldberg, one of the contributors of the podcast.  If you haven’t heard it, you MUST.  Here is their description of the shenanigans they get up to. We’re Julia, Tod, and Rider — three good friends who also happen to be huge book nerds. Scattered to the far reaches of Southern California, more […]
