I Blame TV

The Cadaver King and Country Dentist by Radley Balko and Tucker Carrington

February 10, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

You will never look at science the same way after reading this book. Even if you know that the shows like C.S.I. are science fairy tales what Balko and Carrington chronicle isn’t so much a miscarriage of justice but a deliberate hoodwinking by a group of men (the two in the title are the most important but hardly the only ones) who didn’t give a damn about the truth because those accused were poor, or black or the forgotten or all three. The book focuses […]

Faithful Place by Tana French

February 10, 2019 by Zirza 1 Comment

On a street in a working class neighbourhood in Dublin, in the mid-eighties, nineteen year old Francis ‘Frank’ Mackey stands outside, in the middle of the night, waiting for his girlfriend, Rosie, with whom he is about to make a run for England. She never shows up. Twenty years later, Frank, now a member of Dublin’s undercover police force, receives a call from his panicked relatives. Someone has found Rosie’s suitcase in an abandoned house at the end of the street, and Frank’s theory that […]

This would make a good book club read

Sadie by Courtney Summers

February 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

3.5 stars. A very interesting read, both from a story standpoint and a writing standpoint. It didn’t totally work for me on every level, but I’m not sorry I read it and I would recommend it. DO NOT do the audiobook if you’re a frequent podcast listener. The actors they got for the audio version are trying their hardest, they really are. However, the production and delivery weren’t at all like real podcasts so it was hard to stay inside the world of the book. […]

Everyone’s a little bit garbage sometimes.

Grist Mill Road by Christopher Yates

February 5, 2019 by LadyStardust Leave a Comment

Grist Mill Road is the small side road that leads to the front door of Hannah’s family’s enormous home in 1982. The summer of that year, Hannah will lose her left eye to an unthinkable crime, and her middle school crush, Matthew, will be responsible. By 2008, Hannah is married to Patrick, Matthew’s former best friend, who has recently lost his job. The two never discuss the events of 1982, along with… some other things. In 2008, the three meet again, and as their secrets […]

Brilliant!

Out by Natsuo Kirino

January 29, 2019 by Jake 2 Comments

Rarely am I able to describe books in one word but I can do so with Out: kaleidoscopic. Natsuo Kirino is a popular writer in Japan and I’ve wanted to get into her work for some time. Personally, I had wanted to start with Grotesque but I saw this at a bookstore for a reasonable price and figured What the heck? Well sometimes fate deals you quite a hand. Coincidentally, this is a major theme in Out: how the actions and behaviors of others impact people. We’ll get to […]

Who knew fly-tyers were kind of the worst?

The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson

January 27, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

This was kind of an odd read. I’m glad I picked it up and would recommend it in a heartbeat, but it’s not what I was expecting. It was billed to me as a non-violent art heist true crime type book (I can never resist an art heist!). And sure, that’s mostly technically true. However, the reality is a lot darker than that description implies. The whole book is basically a journey from the famous 18th century British naturalists cataloguing species of all kinds throughout […]
