Bushwick-ed

The Nightworkers by Brian Selfon

October 19, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I was really impressed with large parts of first time writer Brian Selfon’s The Nightworkers. His characterization was of the highest quality. I found myself intrigued with most of the individual plot lines. His descriptions of Bushwick, a neighborhood I’m only somewhat familiar with, made it come to life. I always enjoy a good New York City crime tale set outside of Manhattan, if done right (thinking in this moment of William Boyle and Maggie Estep). And his use of dialogue, no doubt stemming from his days […]

“You’ll light your own bloody self on fire if you have to. And then you can pat yourself on the back and tell yourself you knew it all along. Congratulations.”

The Trespassser (Dublin Murder Squad, #6) by Tana French

Short review for a book that has too much to talk about for me without writing a dissertation. I just find Antoinette Conway to be such an interesting narrator, and I love the way French plays off Conway’s weaknesses with the murder of Aislinn Murray. I had actually forgotten almost everything about this book, except how thorny Conway was as a narrator, and how her paranoia SPOILERS ended up being mostly unjustified END SPOILERS. I had also forgotten how angry Conway made me in her […]

Tana French is back with a vengeance and a penchant for Wild West-isms, and I am HERE. FOR. IT.

The Searcher by Tana French

This is a safe review; I’ll give you no spoilers and I’ll give you no major plot points- but I will let you know that no, we have not returned to the Dublin Murder Squad. While I found the departure disappointing in The Witch Elm, I found it thrilling here; the idyllic landscape filled with the insidious creep of small town communities. While we have not returned to the Murder Squad, we have returned to having a protagonist on the searching side of the law- and […]

Twisty Turny, More Please! (Bingo – Orange)

The Lost Man by Jane Harper

September 19, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Ah Reading. Love it, can’t seem to focus on it. Pandemic, amiright? Something about staring at the same walls all day, and the same computer, and then needing to stare at this computer more to do reviews just doesn’t jive. I’m getting caught up with 3 books that I read…in the past few months. 9 books behind on my Cannonball. What I’m saying is, it’s a bit dire. But what I’m ALSO saying, is here I am, trying anyway. Hip hooray.* *I started this draft […]

Ever get the feeling that you’re being watched?

The Hanging Tree by Ben Aaronovitch

August 28, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Well, my library is being watched at least. I keep reading myself in circles; themes from one book bleed into another; people, places, statements, snippets of songs- this year is becoming one giant, roiling, swirling brew of a book. Peter Grant and the Falcon Family (tm tm tm!) are back in London, up to their necks in the Thames and sinking fast. Luckily, the river is full of gods who are just as willing to save them as they are to let them drown. Last […]

The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin

August 26, 2020 by narfna 14 Comments

I was too young to know anything that was going on when O.J. Simpson was arrested and tried for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her very unlucky friend Ron Goldman. I remember it being all adults talked about (most of it going way over my head). I remember the night of the car chase, because it interrupted T.G.I.F. on ABC, and I was trash for T.G.I.F. as a nine year old, even though it was June and all my shows must […]
