A Tale as Old as Patty Hearst

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

August 24, 2021 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Oh boy, where to begin with this one.  On a crisp autumn evening, art teacher Mia is kidnapped by Colin, a low level criminal. He is supposed to hand her over to a notorious gangster who plans on using Mia to demand ransom from her influential lawyer dad. But Colin knows the gangster, knows what’ll happen to Mia, and impulsively decides to take Mia away himself. He takes her to an abandoned cabin in the woods where they settle in for the winter. As Colin […]

“And truth was, no one was safe anywhere. Everybody dies, baby. That’s a fact.”

Gangster Nation by Tod Goldberg

June 20, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This read was a long time coming! I purchased Gangster Nation when it came out in 2017 and Tod was going on tour promoting it. First things first, I’m referring to him by his first name not because we are in any way actual friends, but because I FEEL like we are because I am a longtime listener of his podcast, Literary Disco, wherein he and two of his friends from an MFA program read and review books. Also, one of those friends is Rider […]

Diamonds are a Reader’s Worst Friend

The Cutting Edge by Jeffrey Deaver

February 15, 2021 by esmemoria 3 Comments

I have read Jeffrey Deaver’s suspense novels on and off for 20 years. I remember in the beginning I loved his ability to raise tension and throw in plot twist after plot twist. Those glory days are over. Deaver’s The Cutting Edge is easily his most boring, flaccid, unsurprising book. The plot is a convoluted mix of international intrigue, diamonds, conspiracies, environmentalism, and of course, murder. The gore is fairly light, although there is a ludicrous scene where the villain forces a victim to swallow […]

You know life is cruel, life is never kind

Neighborhood Watch by Joseph A. Turkot

February 10, 2021 by Zirza Leave a Comment

It’s the fall of 1995 in a small, sleepy town in suburban America. A young boy named Brandon disappears while walking home from school. The people of the town assume he’ll come back on his own account, but his classmates, Jake and Colin, become less sure. They set out to discover what has happened to Brandon, but as more and more boys vanish from the neighborhood they inadvertently end up putting their own lives at risk.  Though it has been written from the perspective of […]

I Think I’ve Read This One Before

The Trespasser by Tana French

January 31, 2020 by caragwapa 2 Comments

When I like a book, I have the tendency to obsessively read everything the author has ever wrote.  Such was the case after I read In the Woods by Tana French.  I loved the atmosphere, the mystery, and especially the characters.  I of course, read all the Tana French books I could find.  When I was going through the epub files in my laptop to find a quick read, I was pleasantly surprised to find a French book I haven’t read yet.  Or have I? […]

A ghost story, almost-horror-novel-but-not, for people who don’t really like ghost stories or horror. And people who do!

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James

January 17, 2020 by narfna 7 Comments

I don’t normally do ghost stories, but I recently joined Book of the Month, and this was the only one of January’s books that seemed like something I might really like, so I ordered it. Plus it was also being touted as a mystery and a thriller, it fit well with my January theme of reading books by and about badass ladies (double check on that here) and with my run of books about shitty men doing bad things to women and girls. Also it’s […]
