Murder at an Irish Wedding has too many annoying cozy clichés

Murder at an Irish Wedding by Carlene O'Connor

March 4, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

Murder at an Irish Wedding is the second book in the Irish Village Mystery series. I absolutely loved the first book, Murder in an Irish Village, when I read it a few years ago. I wanted to continue the series but my local library only had the subsequent novels as mass market paperbacks. I have lupus and its most enduring gift is perpetual hand pain, so I simply can’t hand open mass market paperbacks. Anyway, I was thrilled to discover the entire Irish Village Mystery […]

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society is a good mystery but maybe not for me

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society by Ellery Adams

January 29, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society is a cozy mystery about four women trying to solve a murder in the small town of Miracle Springs, North Carolina. The water from Miracle Springs is reported to have healing powers so people flock to the town. The main character, Nora Pennington, owns the local bookstore and is a “bibliotherapist”. As a bibliotherapist, Nora listens to her customers’ troubles and then prescribes a series of books. If the books are read in the prescribed order, they should help […]

Maybe you’re a misfit, too. Doesn’t mean you’re not deserving. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be here.

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

January 8, 2019 by Dusty Highway 6 Comments

My first CBR last year was eye-opening, to say the least. I paid more attention to my reading than I have since college, and I also paid fresh attention to my book choices after being confronted by the ugly truth of my blindspot for women authors. And though not every book was a winner, I did fall in love with a number of books and authors new to me, including Becky Chambers and her delightful The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, one of […]

That’s just cold

Here I am, and here’s another cozy. But the break made a difference. Or maybe this is just better than the last few I read.

So Jane. Much Marple.

October 28, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 4 Comments

So a while ago, Amazon had a good deal on the whole Christie/Marple collection for Kindle. Of course I jumped on it, because I adore Agatha Christie, and particularly her Marple books. She’s just such a twinkly old lady (so says Agatha, and so says I). I think the omnibus goes in order, so this story is the actual first appearance of Miss Marple. We’re introduced to her in her lovely village of Saint Mary Mead, which is a hotbed of all manner of naughtiness, according […]

Hamish Macbeth the First

January 5, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Yup, yet another cozy mystery. This one set in the Scottish Highlands, in the village of Lochdubh (pronounced Loch-doo), at the Lochdubh School of Casting: Salmon and Trout Fishing. A varied cast of characters has come to the little village for some relaxation and fly fishing. Except for one of the party, nasty old Lady Jane. She’s come to stir shit and chew gum, and she’s all out of gum. Lady Jane is horrid to everyone, and seems to have some dirt on every person […]
