“…Something isn’t right with you and this property. Strange things happen around it. I don’t know what is going on, but I will find out. You could make it easier on yourself by coming clean.” “Sure. This is a magic bed-and-breakfast and the two guys in my kitchen are aliens from outerspace.” Blurb from the back of the book: “On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih […]

August 11, 2023 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR15 Bingo: Edibles (this book features both a lot of food and quite a few drugs) Lila Macapagal used to live in Chicago and dreamed of opening her own restaurant, but both her business and relationship failed miserably. She’s back in her hometown, helping to run her tita (aunt) Rosie run the family restaurant, where they serve Philipino food. The Socialite's Guide to Murder (Pinnacle Hotel Mysteries, #1) by S.K. Golden

I liked this, but not enough to buy the second book. I will be librarying it, thank you, mostly because there are a couple of elements I’m curious to see how they play out. It’s really a classic case of had a good time while reading it, but wouldn’t be upset if I couldn’t ever read another in the series. This takes place in 1958 in NYC at the fictional Pinnacle Hotel, where our main character Evelyn has lived since the age of six, when […]

“Everyone’s got secrets; it’s Florida!”

Grounds for Murder (A Coffee Lover's Mystery) by Tara Lush

June 13, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

My summer of cozy mysteries continues! Grounds for Murder is the first book in a four-part cozy mystery series set in Devil’s Beach, Florida. Our hero is Lana Lewis, a journalist-turned-barista. (Tara Lush is a journalist, as well!) Lewis was doing great as a reporter in Miami, but a series of unfortunate work and personal events led her to moving back home to the Beach. Her hippie dad owns Perkatory, the local island coffee shop. She takes over as the shop manager as she tries […]

The 25th Installment was My 1st – Aunt Dimity

Aunt Dimity and the Enchanted Cottage (Aunt Dimity Mystery #25) by Nancy Atherton

I hesitate to tag this as a “mystery” though the author and publisher themselves list it as a mystery genre title. Moreover, look at the title of the series. The word “mystery” is in it. It’s pretty clear that’s what they think it is and – gosh darnit – I’m not going to not give them that tag. I’m not sure what genre it would be were it not classified as a mystery, to be honest. Is it a dreaded “women’s fiction” novel? (“Dreaded” because that somehow […]
