A cozy mystery with cute dogs and a bookstore.

The Plot is Murder (Mystery Bookshop #1) by V.M. Burns

July 28, 2022 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo Square: Cozy I love cozy mysteries anyway I can get ’em. I love to delve into book series as much as I like to marathon Hallmark Murder Mysteries. I grew up on Murder, She Wrote. I still ask my mom what episode she is watching if we’re talking on the phone while she watches. And even better, I get to learn about fun shows at work when we promote Acorn TV. The Plot Is Murder by V.M. Burns kicks off her Mystery Bookshop […]

Two mysteries for Flavia. . .well, maybe one and a half

I Am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley

Speaking from Among the Bones by Alan Bradley

July 2, 2022 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

Cozy mysteries are a great solace during troubling times, which makes me wonder why I’ve bothered to read anything else since 2017. I started reading the Flavia de Luce series at the end of 2020 and finally got around to picking it back up a few weeks ago. (Thanks, ‘Murica!) For those unfamiliar with the series, it stars an 11-year-old girl named Flavia de Luce who is an aspiring chemist and amateur detective. No doubt she would take offense to both the “aspiring” and “amateur” […]

Books, Friends, and… Murder?

The Tuesday Night Survivors' Club by Lynn Cahoon

June 21, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

After surviving cancer, Rarity Cole moves to Sedona, Arizona, opening a bookstore and starting a book club for fellow cancer survivors. When a new member, Martha, disappears, Rarity, her best friend Sam, and the other book club members start investigating the case. I’m not one much for cozy mysteries, as in a way I can find them oppressive when they part too much from reality. But I was drawn to The Tuesday Night Survivors’ Club because of the unusual focus – a group of cancer survivors – […]

“The mountain is there to be crossed.”

Pardonable Lies by Jacqueline Winspear

June 19, 2022 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

This is third in the Maisie Dobbs series. It was my favorite so far, so I’m looking forward to continuing this series. In Pardonable Lies, Maisie is working on three separate cases: helping 14-year-old Avril Jarvis, who’s been accused of murdering her stepfather, finding out more about her friend Priscilla’s brother, who disappeared during World War I, and working for Sir Cecil Lawton, who promised his wife on her deathbed that he would search for their son, who was also reported dead during WWI. At the […]

Various Reviews During My Vacation, Some Were Brilliant, Some Were Good, Some Were Awful.

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

The Kaiju Preservation Society-5 stars I don’t even know what to say except this was pitch perfect. It reminded me in a good way of “Old Man’s War” and I cheered through the whole book. I loved everyone. I am so sad this is a standalone so we don’t get to follow Jamie and his friends he meets in the Kaiju Preservation Society (KPS). “The Kaiju Preservation Society” begins with Jamie Gray getting fired. Jamie lives in New York and doesn’t know how he will […]

Easter Bonnet Murder by Leslie Meier

March 1, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Lucy Stone, the main reporter in Tinker’s Cove, is concerned for her friend Miss Tilley when she has to move into retirement home Heritage House after an illness. But that concern only grows when an intrepid resident, Agnes, goes missing from the place. I did not realize when I requested this audiobook ARC that it was the twenty-eighth book in the series! Had I not known, I wouldn’t have guessed it, for the writing is not tired at all as you sometimes get with long […]
