The best kind of brain balm

A Kiss for Midwinter by Courtney Milan

May 29, 2019 by TheShitWizard 2 Comments

Doctor Jonas Grantham is in want of a wife. A very practical man, Dr Grantham knows that this is by far the most convenient way to have regular sex without risking an STD, and he soon decides that the eleventh prettiest girl in Leicester would do quite nicely. Unfortunately for Dr Grantham, Miss Lydia Charingford recognises him as the young doctor who was present a few years’ prior when his mentor pronounced her pregnant and ruined forever, and this coupled with Dr Grantham’s boorish attempt […]

Yelling at Terrible Men

Mrs. Martin’s Incomperable Adventure by Courtney Milan

March 25, 2019 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Author’s Note: Sometimes I write villains who are subtle and nuanced. This is not one of those times. The Terrible Nephew is terrible, and terrible things happen to him. Sometime villains really are bad and wrong, and sometimes, we want them to suffer a lot of consequences. I received this novella as an ARC and this is an honest review. Mrs. Bertrice Martin is a wealthy widow of 73 who is bored and depressed. Miss Violetta Beauchamps is a poor spinster of 69 who has […]

Strong Ending to the Brothers Sinister Series

The Suffragette Scandal by Cour

January 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I have to say that this re-read was really enjoyable. I really did like reading about Free and Edward again. I honestly don’t have much to add from my original review except to say that the book starring Violet pales in comparison to this one. Original review below: The character of Free was introduced to readers in her brother’s book (The Heiress Effect #2) and I was instantly enamored with her. When she tells her brother Oliver that the world had better look out for […]

Re-Read Leaves Me Wanting

The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan

January 24, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I did this as a Buddy Read with “Romance Book Buddy Reading” group on Goodreads. Good lord, I got nothing. I just realized why this was my least favorite of the Brothers Sinister books. Sebastian and Violet are tedious, all of the science parts did my head in completely, and Violet’s sister is written inconsistently. The way she is initially framed in the story is being protective of her daughter, then Sebastian calls her a viper, and we get a scene where Violet’s sister is […]

An Award-Winning Milan Novella (CBR10Bingo)

August 5, 2018 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

For my next review and #CBR10Bingo square, let’s stay on brand, shall we? This morning I woke up unconscionably early and decided I had time for a novella before I had to deal with the day: so off to my bingo list and the award-winning novella by Courtney Milan, Her Every Wish. Her Every Wish won the 2017 RITA for Romance Novella. The RITA awards, given by the Romance Writers of America, aim to promote excellence in the genre by recognizing outstanding published romance novels […]

A long-awaited book, not my favorite, but still worth the wait.

June 7, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

I was underwhelmed by the first book in this series when it was published in 2015, and to be honest, I was a little underwhelmed by this one, although it’s a definite improvement. My main complaint with Once Upon a Marquess was that it was too scattered, and the main characters individually and as a couple suffered for it. I also thought their chemistry was a little forced. Both of those complaints were non-existent for me, here. And where I found little sister Theresa an […]
