Utterly forgettable. Read Courtney Milan’s Unraveled instead

December 26, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

Sophie Darling (sadly nowhere near as awesome as my favourite romance heroine with Darling as a surname) is on her way to a job interview in London and unexpectedly and happily finds herself upgraded to first class. Her joy is somewhat lessened when very handsome, but supremely grouchy Gabriel “Scottie” Scott is seated next to her, outraged that one of the two seats he’s purchased has been allotted to someone. Nonetheless, cheerful and mischievous Sophie decides to try to crack handsome guy’s crabby demeanour (at […]

How many romances have you read this year featuring glow in the dark sharks?

4.5 stars Maria Lopez runs a small niche blog where she imagines apocalyptic disaster scenarios and uses her comprehensive knowledge of science to figure out how to best try to avoid said scenarios. While it used to be just a hobby, and the blog wasn’t widely read, recently it’s getting a lot more visitors, and Maria has started getting actual job offers. She has kept her real identity closely guarded, so none of the people offering to hire her know that she’s a woman, working […]

A treatise on the state of women in STEM fields. Plus Romance.

Oh, this book. I thought I had my favorite books of the year all figured out, and then emmalita came around saying the newest Milan was awesome. I really didn’t like the first in the Cyclone series, but I’m trusting of such high praise. And it didn’t let me down. This is story of Maria and Jay. Maria and Jay have actually been friends for years, unbeknownst to both of them, on the internet. They meet for the first time due to a mutual friend […]

These are my Fu*k Off shoes.

Courtney Milan has reminded me why she is one of the best romance writers currently publishing. With Hold Me, she has stepped outside traditional romance characters, but tells a beautifuly traditional romance story. Both protagonists are people of color. Maria is Latina and Jay is Thai. Maria is a trans woman and Jay is bi. It matters and it doesn’t. It matters to them as individuals, it does not matter to them as a couple or to the story. The story is a hate to love, […]

“He uses invisible radiation to turn himself into an asshole.”

The trouble with being a Courtney Milan Fan (with a capital F) is that you rate her romances on a scale that exists independently of all other romances. It would be a shifted bell curve, except that you don’t get to actually start her scale at 2 and end it in 6, so you have to pretend that it’s the same 1-5 as everyone else. What this means is that, when you’re grading on the CMS (Courtney Milan Scale) sometimes you like the book, but […]

Cast off the Shackles of Yesterday

October 17, 2016 by melanir 3 Comments

The Suffragette Scandal is the book six in Milan’s Brothers Sinister series, of which I have read none of the previous volumes. The nice thing about romance series is that you can jump in and out of the series without loosing any context. I suspect there was a scene or two that would have been more enjoyable if I’d read the other novels, but I understood this one just fine. All in all, it’s an excellent romance novel and I enjoyed most of it. I […]
