now we’re cooking (re: writing reviews)

Dawnshard by Brandon Sanderson

December 28, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I really am just getting more confused as we go along, but it’s the type of confused where I think I should understand just slightly more than I do! Luckily there are no end of guides to the Cosmere, and if all else fails there is Evin the Magnificent and their Magnificent Brain to answer questions for me, even when they are so very spectacularly boneheaded (the Lopen woud laugh). SO rather than try and do a bit of a plot synopsis–there is a blurb, […]

something very satisfying about reading this as an actual book!

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson

Hmm okay this can be a four star review, except that I do think that it dragged a bit in the middle and put it down (!!!) a handful of times, including once quite near the end to see whether I could get my hands on the next book in short order (as it turns out yes, I can) (thank you public libraries!). I noted this in my recent White Sands review, but this book has the turn towards the “okay, diplomacy and talking might […]

should have waited for the Omnibus

White Sand Vol. 1 by Brandon Sanderson, Rik Hoskin, Julius Gopez

Volume 1 I suppose these are hard to write individually, since they form a cohesive three book arc—but, annoying, I can’t just say that I read the Omnibus edition because that is, in fact, a newly edited version that everyone says to read in lieu of reading the three individual volumes. I wish I had looked up this information ahead of time, but when I saw that the individual volumes were available at my various local public libraries but the omnibus was not, I thought […]

more cosmere novellas, but with an ick

Edgedancer by Brandon Sanderson

December 27, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Had to look up when this was written and was really hoping it was…really long ago? It was 2016, which to be fair does feel like a thousand years ago, but its not really far enough back for Sanderson to use as a plot point (and lame laugh lines) the fact that a secondary character (a senior scribe, who happens to be female) is fat. It’s just…gives the ick, you know, in a book that’s otherwise really enjoyable and written from a unique POV. The […]

more cosmere novellas

Sixth of the Dusk by Brandon Sanderson

December 27, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

What a fascinating story, exactly what I’ve come to expect but just because Sanderson is usually on point doesn’t mean we don’t give him credit for doing so! As always, this short story packs more of a wallop than many longer novels I’ve read and/or started to read and summarily abandoned. Briefly put, we start in the head of a trapper accompanied by his two birds, and while you expect that there is more than meets the eye it’s hard to get much because our […]

Cosmere ahoy

Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell by Brandon Sanderson

December 27, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Have given up trying to post these in order, I have. There’s a really cool thing that Sanderson does, which is collate a series of perhaps unrelated ideas into a cohesive. That might be under selling his skill set– perhaps each of these worlds is built from the ground up from entirely new ideas– but the author note seems to suggest that this story in particular grew from a seed of an idea grafted onto another seed, all of which was planted in the soil […]
