A scary, political, techno-thrilling ride of a book.

March 6, 2015 by narfna 1 Comment

I think I might be too stupid to write this review. Long story short: This book was a hell of a ride. It was slightly problematic as a novel, but damn if it wasn’t powerful anyway. It should probably be required reading. Long story long? Weeeeeellll. That’s when my brain starts to make whirring and booping noises and then I want to put my laptop away and go to sleep. I wanted so badly to like this book.  Jen Wang’s artwork is so fantastic and it’s pretty much the sole reason I gave it three stars instead of two.  It’s a graphic novel with realistically drawn women/girls, it’s got a message, it’s about gaming; in theory, it’s everything I should love. Doctorow starts off with a great introduction that really resonated with me.  The internet has revolutionized modern day communication!  (Yeah!  The internet has cat pictures and stuff!)  With the internet, we now have so […]

A sneakily intellectual graphic novel about a girl learning to love gaming.

December 31, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

Read this all in one go before work one morning last month and really, really liked it. If it had just been a story about a girl and her second gaming life I would have liked it anyway, but it also had some really unexpected stuff about economics and labor, which is not something you exepct to find in a book whose artwork makes you want to hug a pillow because it’s so adorable. You know pretty quickly, though. The book opens with an essay by […]
