Two communities diverged, but come together in the woods

In the Dark by Kate Hoefler

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One of the interesting pieces of In the Dark is that it is not what it seems. And once you go farther into Kate Hoefler’s book than the cover you see that. The idea is that two voices are saying how “bad” the other is, due to their differences and the lack of knowledge by the other party. But if you watch closely, you see that things are not always dark, especially with the forest, which we are told the “witches” live. And as we […]

Nourish the Tree

The Tree in Me by Corinna Luyken

March 26, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do not wear your face shield when trying read a book that this poetic, and has romantic pink, greens, orange, gold, and red colors in swirly illustrations. Especially when the shield is a bit on the damaged side and already makes things a little fuzzy. The above mentioned swirly got to almost nauseous causing levels. However, do read this book, The Tree in Me (with all the good above) in your comfy reading spot, snuggled up to a kiddo or two that will sit and […]

Mistakes were made, but that’s totally okay!

The Book of Mistakes by Corinna Luyken

Princesses Are Not Perfect by Kate Lum, Illustrated by Sue Hellard

May 26, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

The Book of Mistakes by Corinna Luyken This consists mostly of brief text and simple drawings.  We go on a journey of what happens when someone makes a mistake, this time with art.  The artist makes a mistake, and in the process makes another mistake in trying to fix it.  But then they try something else that turns out well. Mistakes keep getting made, but the fixing of them sends the project on an entirely new direction. This teaches us that instead of constantly erasing […]

A little Heart attack can be a good thing

My Heart by Corinna Luyken

January 10, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Heart by Corinna Luyken is getting a bit of press and is becoming a darling of the picture book world (I smell multiple awards and acknowledgments in its future). While I did not gush over it, I feel it is a solid 3.5 rating. This is mostly due to the content of the book. The theme is a bit mature and seems to be aimed mostly at adults. Also the stark (though lovely) artwork also makes it adult and almost abstract in nature. While […]

Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse or does he?

September 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse by Marcy Campbell has some interesting elements. It is a softer version (text and illustration wise) of Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. Chloe, the narrator of our story knows that Adrian cannot have a horse. Why? Because he cannot have a horse in town. Or in his small house. Or the fact it takes a lot of money to take care of a horse and he has raggedy clothing. It is not until her mother gives her a […]
