Red Velvet reps NY?

Baking Across America by B. Dylan Hollis

May 30, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

I’m starting to think I might be getting a little old to appreciate late Gen Z/early Gen Alpha influencer-types. I wasn’t the hugest fan of Dylan Hollis’ first book, although I applaud the premise. I was thusly a bit unsure about the second book, but this one has some things going for it the first one did not. Our author hit the big time as a YouTube/social media foodie influencer with a focus on vintage Americana cookery. Baking Across America is framed as a “vintage” […]

How to Raise Your Own Kids Baking Champion

bake it by DK

March 9, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was watching reruns of Kid’s Baking Championship, and I think it might have inspired me to pick up a kids baking book off the library shelf. bake it also happens to be a DK book, and I’ve usually had good luck with DK instructional stuff. Being a kids book, and thus more basic assumptions of skill and knowledge, it makes sense that there are a lot of images of techniques for decorating, as well as preparing doughs, batters, fillings, etc. What I don’t quite […]

The Great British Baking Show Favorite Flavors by Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, 2022 bakers

November 24, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So the Great British Bake Off aka Great British Baking Show books have been kind of hit or miss; more miss lately, but thankfully, in spite of some unfortunate decisions during the actual series, the book is back to what it should be: cool bakes that are actually achievable and useful to an average home baker. The Great British Baking Show: Favorite Flavors has a lot of things I think I both can and actually want to try. Before I get into the good stuff, […]

Be your own country dessert providing grandma

250 Treasured Country Desserts by Andrea Chesman, Fran Raboff

October 29, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 25: Cozy What’s cozier than grandma’s best homemade dessert? Not much, I’d say.  250 Treasured Country Desserts provides. This is one of those recipe collections that’s got the expected standards like molasses cookies, apple cake, jelly roll, lemon meringue pie (also lemon angel pie which looks like basically the same thing?), fruit buckle, and pudding. It’s also got some more interesting, newer to me items that I want to try like orange poppyseed cake (closely related to the lemon standard probably but a slightly […]

Cookies for a cause: the best kind

Smash the Pastry-archy by Planned Parenthood

December 18, 2021 by Bothari43 4 Comments

The Georgia Planned Parenthood was selling these as a fundraiser, and I was more than happy to participate and support! Each recipe is from an Atlanta-area restaurant or bakery. I’ve tried three of the recipes so far. Two are definite keepers (the peanut butter chocolate chip pretzel ones from JC’s Cookies were the best, and the ginger shortbread thumbprint cookies from Banshee were very good), and one I probably won’t make again (the strawberry shortcake ones from Kimball House were an odd consistency). But I’m […]

You’ll be smarter than a cookie

The Smart Cookie (Food Group) by Jory John

November 26, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Smart Cookie (Food Group) by Jory John is not my favorite of the Food Books they and Pete Oswald created. With that said, there is nothing wrong with this picture book, I just feel that like, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series, we have gone to the bakery one too many times. Yet, the story of being yourself, and finding your own way of being creative or clever, is nicely illustrated by Oswald’s fun, silly, colorful, detailed illustrations. The cover tells you […]
