A few muffins, scones, and cakes to go with the stories

Donna Bell's Bake Shop by Pauley Perrette, Darren Greenblatt, Matthew Sandusky

September 21, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 17: Vintage Cookbook about vintage style baking bakery. Donna Bell’s Bake Shop apparently closed in 202, thanks to the pandemic. But before that, it was a Southern-style bakery in NYC. One of the main selling points was the recipes from the name sake Donna Bell, who is one of the owners’ mother. Most of the recipes are pretty straight forward, almost to the point of basic. I kind of have to wonder that if this kind of thing is what the bakery actually marketed, […]

Two Souths Don’t Come Together Here

My Two Souths by Asha Gomez

August 11, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 9: Fiasco My Two Souths is not a bad cookbook; however, it seems to present itself as a hybrid between the American South (Atlanta GA) and the Kerala region of India (southern costal area). For me, as a fusion cuisine book, this one is a fail. Adding turmeric and garam masala to turkey pot pie is not really new or interesting, and I have no idea why it’s especially Southern (in either sense). Adding black pepper to dessert, likewise, how is this Southern? Rhubarb […]

Dinner and a Show is more about the show and getting your own dinner

Bollywood Kitchen by Sri Rao

August 4, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader 3 Comments

Bingo 8: Bollywood Book title: Bollywood Kitchen. Explanation for square done, except to point out that this book is not a book about food in Bollywood movies, it’s a book about food inspired by how the author remembers or perceives a handful of contemporary Bollywood films. So that means things like a family drama film paired with a Thanksgiving tinged family dinner (spiced roast chicken, sweet/savory pumpkin, and cashew fried rice); or the Shakespeare adaptation of Hamlet paired with butternut squash soup and Himalayan shepherds […]

DIY Bubbles

Bubble Tea: 50 fun recipes for boba and beyond by Livia Abraham

August 4, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 7: Bananas Bananas are among other things kind of whimsical, definitely sweet, and have a tendency to overshadow anything they are put with. These are qualities also shared by bubble tea, and so for this square I have Bubble Tea: 50 fun recipes for boba and beyond. I don’t know why there hasn’t been a Despicable Me scene with the Minions getting bubble tea; I can totally picture that. Bananas are also associated (at least in my mind, along with apples) school lunches (and […]

A little grass in my coffee might actually sound …good?

Mooncakes & Milk Bread by Kristina Cho

July 28, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 6: Part 1 Mooncakes & Milk Bread is a cookbook emphasizing Chinese bakery baking. For those, like me, who don’t exactly know what that is, there are occasional 2-ish page interludes with stories and explanations. The reason such a thing qualifies for this square? About 80% of the recipes are extensions of one of four base recipes (the parts 1): milk bread, mooncake, steamed bun, and a variation on puff pastry. Basically, there are 4 part ones, followed by a lot of recipes that […]

Girls Gone Veg by Toni Pressley, Ali Riley

July 26, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 5: Games The title girls of Girls Gone Veg: Plant-Based Recipes by Athletes for Everyone are Toni Presley and Ali Riley, both professional soccer players. I don’t really follow the sports ball, but at least at some point these two played for the Orlando Pride within the NWSL. Thus, while this is a cookbook, it’s also a book written by athletes with the physical demands of their game in mind. It shows up in the photos and occasionally in the headers. So it counts. […]
