Almost enough to make you sign up for a baking competition

February 29, 2016 by Jak 4 Comments

Paul Hollywood has baked for the Queen. He was Head Baker at the Dorchester and supplies bread to Harrods. Basically, the man can bake. He’s also known for his steely blue-eyed stare at hapless contestants on The Great British Bake-Off, a.k.a. cooking show crack. Generally, I read cookery books to entreat myself to make something more interesting for dinner one night, c’mon you can do it, and ooh look at the pretty pictures. This is possibly the first time I have ever read a cookery book […]

The Problem with Cookbooks is I Want to Eat Everything Now and I Can’t

January 24, 2016 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

This book helped me finally understand the difference between baking powder and baking soda. As someone who bakes regularly, this should be something I already get. But the thing is, I mostly just bake recipes other people share; I’m not good enough to be able to sort out my own. I don’t know the best ratios of liquid to dry ingredients, so I can’t just sub things in and out. I really appreciated that the book has a generous introduction before diving into recipes. The […]

Sweet Perfection

February 7, 2015 by llp 7 Comments

For this past Mother’s Day, my family got me the ice cream maker attachment for my beloved KitchenAid mixer. I had been kind of kicking the idea of getting one for some time, but had always been shot down by my husband, who did not have fond memories of homemade ice cream as a child. His mother refuses to follow recipes, generally, so I would gently point out there might have been a flaw in the system, but never got anywhere until this genuinely surprising […]

Suggestipe: Read this book

September 22, 2014 by NTE 5 Comments

I assume, at this point, that just about everyone on the Internets has seen at least one episode of My Drunk Kitchen, starring the lovely Hannah Hart. If you have not, may I suggest this banana bread episode, also starring Grace Helbig? (“We’ll find out!”) But, let’s just assume that you’ve seen an episode or two, or that -if you haven’t – my explanation that MDK  is basically about a rambly, philosophizing, goofily drunk host who hangs out with her friends, LOVES TO USE PUNS, […]

Good Food Can Be Fast

January 29, 2014 by xoxoxoe Leave a Comment

As an addendum to an earlier post, I picked up a cookbook, Gordon Ramsay’s Fast Food, by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay from our local library. Like Ramsay himself, it is bold and basic in nature. His recipes, from dishes featured on his television seriesThe F Word, range far over various cuisines, but all seem pretty possible to accomplish, as long as one has the right ingredients. Each recipe can be completed in less than an hour, too. The recipes are all designed to be easy peasy (once […]

Stanley Tucci really loves to cook (and bake, and grill …)

January 16, 2014 by xoxoxoe 1 Comment

I heard that the actor Stanley Tucci had written a cookbook — not a surprise from the star and moving force behind the cinematic delightful ode to Italian food, Big Night. But until I picked up The Tucci Cookbook I had no idea how deeply his love of food and cooking went. Readers of this cookbook will be happy to find included his step-by-step directions for the movie’s signature dish, timpano, and its many variations. This is not just a book of recipes, but a collection of stories, as […]
