If Your Nerdiest English Professor Wrote A Cookbook

MLA Members Cook by Modern Language Association

January 5, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

There are two ways to think about this: what’s the nerdiest thing you can think of OR what’s the most in-jokey vanity project you can think of? Either way, the answer is MLA Members Cook!  This is a cookbook supposedly created by collecting recipes from members of the MLA; yes that MLA, as in the formatting and citation style your English teachers and professors made you use. I said ‘supposedly’ created  because based on what this supposed book is presented as, a cookbook by members […]

I want to own this book

October 7, 2018 by llp 3 Comments

I am not even sure I follow Chrissy Teigen on Twitter, but everything I have read indicates she is bright, witty and compassionate. Plus, I have heard a lot of positive buzz about all the food she makes, and I was in the mood for some new comfort food recipes. Cravings it was to be for this particular bingo square. So, thank you interlibrary loan for bringing me this delightful book! My spouse is allergic to poultry, so we don’t generally eat it at home. […]

Bringing a community back together

September 28, 2018 by kittenkong42 1 Comment

On the 14th of June 2017 Grenfell Tower burned and a community lost 72 people and their home. The recovery process is still ongoing and the building is a scar and a reminder of how cutting costs and ignoring residents can come with a very high price. But Grenfell is a community and they have pulled together in the aftermath of these events to rebuild their lives. And one of the ways they have come together as a community is through cooking – the Al-Manaar […]

Dropping the Hammer

September 19, 2018 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

**I want to add a quick update because this is cracking me up. Ever since I posted this review, half of the ads I see on websites are in Korean. Apparently just taking the time to look up the correct names of food is enough to convince the bots you’re bilingual!**   I’m a little unsure exactly how to review a cookbook, but I’m going to take a crack at it, because this is a good one.   I first found Maangchi via her YouTube […]

Yes, she can be a little “extra.” But the food is delicious.

I think at this point, most of humanity is familiar with Chrissy Teigen. I follow her on Twitter and Instagram. I enjoy her comment round-ups on Comments by Celebrities. I love her obsession with Walter(Owen’s Grandp), who may or may not be real. Her kids are adorable and her mothering is relatable. Her husband seems cool and pretty normal for a massive celebrity. And like a lot of others, SOMETIMES I CANNOT GET THE RIDICULOUS HEADBAND OF THE DAY SONG OUT OF MY HEAD. Sure, […]

This is a cookbook, but don’t read it for the recipes

August 25, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So I’ve had Salt Fat Acid Heat on my TBR list for a while, and to be honest I’d kind of forgotten about it. Then I decided to go to the library and wander a bit because the library had just reopened after some county budget shenanigans nearly shut it down, threatening to defund it. So in addition to the manga section (I may have raided that too) I went browsing the cookbooks. In some ways this seems also like a misclassification for this book […]
