I miss traveling and am daydreaming through food.

The Irish Pub Cookbook by Margaret M. Johnson, Leigh Beisch (photographer)

March 20, 2021 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

It had been my intention to review this cookbook on St. Patrick’s Day, but my timings were a bit off. So here we are a few days later, but my positive experience with this book works year-round. I really like The Irish Pub Cookbook because beyond its quality recipes it is a book you can read. Placed throughout are informational sections about a variety of pubs all over Ireland as well as the recipes. It’s a celebration of over 70 pub classics as well as […]

Mary Berry Food May Not Be For Me

Mary Berry Everyday by Mary Berry

February 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

So fair warning, this is a cookbook review but I have little intention of trying many of the recipes. As I was posting my notes on Goodreads, I glanced at the top review listed, and the reviewer made a point I absolutely agree with; to paraphrase, the title Mary Berry Everyday was slightly misleading in that quite a few of the recipes aren’t exactly everyday by a lot of contemporary standards, at least as defined by me. I’ve tried a lot of Mary Berry baking […]

The Great British Baking Show Love to Bake by Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, the Bakers

January 17, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I may have to re-impose my occasional moratorium on cookbooks, specifically baking, for a while. The Great British Baking Show released the annual cookbook to accompany the most recent season on Dec. 22; I pre-ordered. Due some unforeseen delays, I only just got the book a few days ago. The problem I have is that I only just started working my way through Pieometry; I’m a good ways through my Paul Hollywood book (How to Bake), but there’s still a lot to get through with […]

Pandemic Project Worthy Pies

Pieometry by Lauren Ko

December 30, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

This is probably my last review of the year 2020, and I’m glad it’s a pretty good one. I should also note that this is a review of a cookbook that I have not made any recipes from yet. I plan to start tomorrow, but by that point it may be too late to review for this year. I have however read the whole thing, so I don’t feel too bad about that. One reason I want to review Pieometry for 2020 is that in […]

Is a cookbook that’s more about decoration still a cookbook?

Let's Bake! A Pusheen Cookbook by Claire Belton and Susanne Ng

August 16, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 7 Comments

Bingo Review 18 How To Cookbook review ahead, but really more of a how to decorate book. Full disclosure: I have not actually attempted anything in Let’s Bake! A Pusheen Cookbook. There is a big reason for that which I will get to shortly. First, for those unfamiliar, Pusheen is a cartoon character popular on the internet, but now perhaps best known for cutesey merchandise, like socks, mystery boxes, and calendars, widely available all over. Pusheen herself is a grey tabby cat, and by now […]

Queer Eye Impulse Grab a the Library

Antoni in the Kitchen by Antoni Porowski

February 15, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I like cookbooks, both to use and to read. I also like the tv show Queer Eye, although I’m behind on the most recent season. I’ve seen and heard some things about the current food guy, Antoni, so when I saw his cookbook, I kind of had to pick it up and see. The biggest thing I was curious about was what kind of food does Antoni do when he’s not necessarily trying to show someone the basics? The biggest critique on him I noticed […]
