The Main Character Was Too Hard to Take

Death and Other Happy Endings by Melanie Cantor

May 3, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on July 9, 2019.  Wow. This book ended up not working for me at all. Probably because the initial premise (Jennifer Cole) being diagnosed with an incurable condition giving her months to live didn’t really get focused on too much. Instead we focused on Jennifer writing letters to her ex-husband, her ex’s current wife, her ex-lover, her ex-childhood friend, and her sister. Yeah […]

Just Keep Swimming

Swimming for Sunlight by Allie Larkin

May 3, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book was released on April 23, 2019.  So “Swimming for Sunlight.” I went back and forth on this one. The main character is Katie Ellis who divorces her husband and takes her rescue dog Bark back to Florida to stay with her maternal grandmother, Nan. Katie gives up everything that she is entitled to so her husband doesn’t get joint custody of the dog. So she arrives with […]

A pretty good second book; I hope she has an easier time with #3!

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

April 4, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

This was a bit rough (you can tell she struggled to write it, and Darcy as a character sort of reflects a little of that desperation), but I thought it was charming and entertaining, maybe moreso because of that roughness. Full disclosure, though, I read almost all of this while sitting and waiting to (not) be picked for jury duty, so that may have affected my reading of it. Also, it has now been a month since I’ve read this, I’ve probably forgotten things. I […]

IOU

I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella

March 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

The main reason why I didn’t give this five stars is that Fixie bugged me up until almost the 50 percent mark of this book. She was a pushover and I noticed that both times she got swept up in a man, that’s all that mattered. I also thought the ending was a bit weak with the mother not being informed about all that went on. I think that would have been better going forward for the family. Maybe there should have been an epilogue […]

A completely unsatisfactory review of a good book.

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

March 18, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Contemporary isn’t usually my genre, but this was really well put together. A good follow up to The Hate U Give. This is one of those reviews that makes my review backlog pile up, because I’m having a hard time saying stuff about it. So I’m just going to wing it and live with the fact that my review will not be as good as I want it to be, or say what I want it to say (whatever that is? I don’t even know). […]

Not the Best Monroe Book I Have Read

Skyward by Mary Alice Monroe

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Honestly this one didn’t work when you focused on the adult characters. There was also a wise old black man helping out the white people around him and that didn’t sit that well with me either. I think the biggest issue is that Harris was selfish about everything and Ella should have stayed professional. The characters of Elijah, Brady, and Clarice are the only parts of the book I enjoyed reading about. Monroe backed off on incorporating Brady into more of the story and I […]
