Good, not great, M/M romance

June 1, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

I have really mixed feelings about this book, but overall really enjoyed it.  If I had the luxury of time to sit and read it in a single sitting I would have.  Every time I picked it up I found myself sucked in.  But strangely, when I wasn’t reading it, I had trouble finding the compulsion to pick it back up. This is a contemporary New Adult M/M story.  Refreshingly, both characters are already out, and at no time question their sexuality.  (I know there […]

Decentish New Adult Romance

May 24, 2016 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

I found Tracy Ward’s new adult contemporary sports romance, Rookie Mistake, in the “multicultural and interracial romance” section on Amazon. Wanting more diversity in my favoured genre, I have been making a point of seeking it out.  Please note that in this same “multicultural and interracial romance” section, Amazon also lists shape-shifter romances such as Alpha Rancher Bear: BWWM Bear Shifter Paranormal Romance which, correct me if I’m wrong, qualifies as neither multicultural nor interracial but may, depending on their retrospective corporeal forms during consummation, qualify […]

Ugh, Teenagers! (No, It’s Not Wuthering Heights)

May 20, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 3 Comments

To be clear, I am phoning it in so much with these two that I am putting two unrelated contemporary romances in one review, borrowing plot summaries from Amazon, and giving myself the personal challenge of reacting to both as succinctly as possible. I thought I had purchased new adult romances, but it turned out I had purchased young adult romances. It’s apparently a very fine line and I suspect down to tone as much as anything else. The Hazards of Skinny Dipping and Ransom […]

An extended grumble with a few facepalms and at least one out loud “WHY”

May 19, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

After two of her books, I have a very complicated relationship with Sonali Dev. It would be very, very easy if I could just say “I don’t like her books,” and move on. Instead, I’m in the potentially masochistic position of still wanting to read her work, but I just desperately want it to be better. I want to respect the hero. I want him to respect the heroine. I don’t want to read how he lies and hides things from her, or how he […]

What a Waste of a Bearded Hero

May 19, 2016 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

Another Kindle Unlimited book, another M/M romance, and one of two romances I have read recently in which there was a large age difference between the main characters. From Amazon: In 48 hours, I lost everything. I came home to find my girlfriend of four years with another man. The next day a plane crash ripped my family away from me, shattering me in the process. In many ways, I died that day, too. The fun-loving man who’d lived in the fast lane and loved his career […]

What book could live up to this cover?

May 18, 2016 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

Jaci Burton’s books were described to me as ‘explicit sports romances’.  Those words, in that order, speak directly to my soul. Unfortunately, I was not really taken with this book. Rather than the characters ever feeling real to me, it ended up more like fantasy, football porn.  (That comma is key, I am not talking the kind of fantasy where you pick your team each week and brag to your coworkers – more like the kind where someone dreams about being whisked away in a […]
