I found The Royal We excessively charming, for all that it is — as others have mentioned — Will and Kate Cambridge fanfiction. Every major player in their IRL romance has a direct analog here as far as I can tell (though I don’t truly consider myself an expert) and though our protagonist, Bex, is American, she still comes from money as Kate Middleton did. All of the major events in their romance are covered here, and, cover illustrations aside, even the physical descriptions of […]
You guys, I found our next “Act Like It”!
Edit – after getting this in audio (because I wasn’t allowed to keep hoarding Audible credits AND) because I couldn’t get the story out of my head, it’s quite clear that I have to upgrade this to five stars. I very rarely feel the need to re-read a book this soon after first reading it. It’s just so much fun. I love Lucy and Josh – they’re awesome. 4.5 stars Lucinda “Lucy” Hutton is working her dream job. Well, sort of. Ever since she was […]
Do you prefer your coffee with some Angst?
This is my second Annabeth Albert novella. I really liked it, although not nearly as much as the first. She packs a LOT of angst into this one. Angst is not my preferred flavor, but I still enjoyed it, and read it very fast. Like the other novella, the set up for the story is very straightforward, and both characters likeable. Robby is a Portland hipster who owns his own coffee cart. He has a crush on David, a daily regular customer. They dance around […]
A Free Book Not Quite Worth It for the Title Alone
Manaconda by Taryn Elliott and Cari Quinn
I took great delight in telling people I had just bought/read a book called Manaconda. My husband very nearly injured himself with his frequent and violent eye rolling. Contemporary romance characters often have supposedly glamourous professions and this Taryn Elliott and Cari Quinn series features rock stars which, it should be noted, is not the same as being musicians. Other occupations standing in for all those dukes and earls from historical romance include: successful actors professional football players professional hockey players professional basketball players billionaire […]
A pleasantly easy read
4.5 stars I think Dirty came to me at the right time, as it had been some time since I had read even a passable (non-paranormal) contemporary romance. Kylie Scott has always been reliable for me, and she keeps getting better, particularly in the feminism department. Her heroines are gradually becoming more and more fully realized, behaving less like romance archetypes and more like regular human women. Her heroes, while definitely starting from a recognizable template, are drawn with flourishes that make them more three-dimensional […]
Too rich
2.5 stars There is no way that this isn’t going to sound like splitting hairs given the genre, but The Chocolate Rose is a very, very hearts and flowers romance novella that is… too romantic? Everything is expressed so very ardently, and I totally get the appeal, but it’s not for me. This book is very But I’m more here for So, like, witticisms and sarcasm. The level of romantic proclamations on display go a long way to mask the fact that, for me, there […]
