A Fun, Fluffy, but Also Terrible Read

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

January 16, 2019 by Alexis 5 Comments

Crazy Rich Asians as been at the top of my TBR pile for ages and I was THRILLED to receive a copy from the Cannonball Holiday Exchange (I still don’t know who sent these so I say to the universe – THANK you, the Cannonball Book Exchange is always a delight!) Rachel and Nick are a couple of college-professor lovebirds working at NYU who decide to spend their summer traveling around Asia as this is something that college professors do on the regular (no it […]

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren

January 7, 2019 by baxlala 1 Comment

This was the last book I read in 2018, after a week and a half of sloth and gluttony and travel and ZERO READING because it turns out if I exhaust all of my introverted tendencies with an overabundance of alcohol and sugar and family and friend time (which I love!) because we’re only home a few times a year so we have to SQUEEZE IT ALL IN, I have no brainpower left to read. It’s quite sad, really. I still feel a bit like […]

“Alexa looked down into her coffee again, gazing into the dark brown liquid like it was Dumbledore’s Pensieve”

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

January 4, 2019 by esme 3 Comments

The Wedding Date, by Jasmine Guillory, is a delightful romcom that doesn’t shy away from some of the tough work involved in interracial relationships. Alexa calls Drew on his privilege many times in the book, and Drew demonstrates that he’s learning. These issues come up throughout the book, but not in a preachy way – in a way that shows a relationship growing and trust developing. Briefly, Alexa and Drew ‘meet cute’ in an elevator, which sets the stage for a fake relationship. Their chemistry […]

The Whole Big MacGuffin Enchilada

November 28, 2018 by WhimBimThankYouMim Leave a Comment

When I finished reading early 2018’s The Wedding Date, it was great news to read that writer Jasmine Guillory had another book coming out. Thanks to a few specific websites, I really took to reading the “good kind” of romance fiction they recommended (to realize later that most of it has been, is, and always will be wonderful) and Guillory’s books were warm, comforting hugs before bedtime. I liked that food played such a role in her romance fiction.  What you eat means something to […]

Such a good book, giving me comfort in the (literal) dark times

November 25, 2018 by Malin 1 Comment

This is a re-read of one of my favourites. My original review (which is quite lengthy) can be found here. We’re pretty much in the coldest and darkest part of the year here in Norway now and it gets harder to motivate oneself for anything except hibernation, really. So with an ever more attentive and demanding baby and preparing to go back to work as a teacher for the first time in over a year, I’m not really up for anything very challenging to read in […]

This is the version of this story that I was looking for

November 24, 2018 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

A few years ago, there was a book called The Hating Game that featured two people in competition for the same job and even as they pretended to hate each other, sparks were flying and it turned out they actually liked each other very much. Everyone loved that book. I kind of thought it was just okay although I tried very hard to like it. This book has a VERY similar premise and I like it much more. Rather than the romantic comedy contrivance of […]
