Lucy Parker writes another keeper

Headliners by Lucy Parker

December 27, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Disclaimer! I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but this has in no way influenced my review.  While this works fine as a standalone contemporary romance, both characters and some of the events that complicate their relationship early on are introduced in The Austen Playbook, which I can also heartily recommend. Official book description: He might be the sexiest man in London, according to his fan site (which he definitely writes himself), but he’s also the most arrogant man she’s ever met. She might have […]

It’s piles and piles of emotional homework forever if you ever want to qualify as a grown-up

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi

December 26, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Official book description: For Penny Lee, high school was a total nonevent. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she’d somehow landed a boyfriend, they never managed to know much about each other. Now Penny is heading to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer. It’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind. Sam’s stuck. Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially. He works at a café and sleeps there too, on […]

An interesting twist on the “there’s only one bed” trope

The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

December 21, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Official book description: Tiffy Moore and Leon Twomey each have a problem and need a quick fix. Tiffy’s been dumped by her cheating boyfriend and urgently needs a new flat. But earning minimum wage at a quirky publishing house means that her choices are limited in London. Leon, a palliative care nurse, is more concerned with other people’s welfare than his own. Along with working night shifts looking after the terminally ill, his sole focus is on raising money to fight his brother’s unfair imprisonment. […]

Come for the food, stay for the food.

The Wedding Party (The Wedding Date, #3) by Jasmine Guillory

December 19, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I should have kept track of how many pizzas were consumed in this book. (Do not read this, or really any of Jasmine Guillory’s books, if you are hungry.) This book was the perfect choice for a lazy Saturday afternoon. Theo and Maddie have a best friend in common (Alexa from Guillory’s first book, The Wedding Date) but have disliked each other from their first meeting. Maddie thinks Theo is a pompous, boring know-it-all who is dismissive of her job, and Theo thinks Maddie is […]

This is the one I’ve been waiting for

House Rules by Ruby Lang

December 13, 2019 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Ruby Lang is one of the authors I started reading and fell in love with in 2019. I have enjoyed every one of her books, but I think House Rules is my favorite. It is a second chance at love romance between a long divorced middle aged couple who become roommates because real estate costs in New York City are awful. I received an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Many years ago, Lana Kau and Simon Mizrahi were married. They were in the […]

Solid Entry in Cedar Cove Series

44 Cranberry Point by Debbie Macomber

November 5, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

This was just an okay installment in the Cedar Cove series. I thought that Macomber often glossed over really serious issues with no real communication between couples (Cecilia and Ian; Jon and Maryellen) and that the whole mystery with Bob and Peggy was a big washout. It could only have been one person behind the whole thing so color me unsurprised by the reveal. That said, I did enjoy reading about certain events (the bachelor/dog auction was hilarious) and cracked up at Jack and Olivia […]
