Four years in four days

September 29, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 8 Comments

I can recognize a sensation when I see it. Sarina Bowen’s tag blew up this summer with positive reviews for her series, The Ivy Years, and after more minor prodding on Facebook, I decided to change the status on when to read these from “Later” to “Now.” All four stories feature couples who are in some capacity part of the Fake Harvard Harkness varsity hockey universe. Each book excels at portraying characters who behave as real people would, in situations both mundane and extraordinary. These […]

Contemporary Romance with Cliche Apotheosis

September 29, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 16 Comments

The review title is correct, ladies and gentlemen, I have read about 400 romance novels and seen a lot of tropes, but Insatiable has done it. The hero of this book achieves CLICHE APOTHEOSIS. He is arrogance in human form, a vain, cocksure stereotype. Insatiable II: Insatiabler was the obvious title for the second book in this duet and a missed opportunity on Amazon’s part, but I’ll still let them set the tone: Lust-maker. Pleasure giver. Fantasy creator. I can blow your mind in five […]

Contemporary Romance, My ASS!

September 27, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 9 Comments

I HATED THIS BOOK AND ITS SO-CALLED CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE AND THE MAIN CHARACTERS ARE AWFUL, SELFISH PEOPLE AND I HATE THEM. A man and woman meet when she is on the verge of getting engaged to her long-term, perfectly nice, boyfriend. Man and woman spark and decide to hook up. They go on with their lives and strike up an increasingly inappropriate, emotional infidelity based, long-distance quote friendship unquote. When they are in the same city they boff, then she goes back to her decent. […]

Jump already, Laney!

Compared to its series predecessor, Off the Edge didn’t work quite as well for me. But I still enjoyed the story and overall continue to appreciate Carolyn Crane’s obvious talent for interweaving romance and suspense. In a genre that can seem a hackneyed (to me, at least) The Associates series so far stands out by distinguishing its operatives as pretty genuine nerds — shockingly handsome ones, of course — but real egghead types, with particular specialties that make them well-suited for investigative work. Macmillan, in […]

A sexy, contemporary romance with comic book geeks

September 20, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars Lorelei “Lola” Castle and Oliver Lore got married in Las Vegas, as did their friends Ansel and Mia and Finn and Harlow. While their friends were busy getting physical all over their hotel suites, Lola and Oliver walked for hours along the strip talking, not even holding hands. By the time Lola plucked up the courage to ask if they should get their own hotel room, Oliver had concluded that Lola wasn’t a one night stand kind of a girl, and rejected the […]

Minerva Highwood’s great-great-great granddaughter is free on Kindle, but her book could be better

September 16, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

Sometimes three stars are because a book was overall average, and sometimes it’s because of an actual mean — a combination of one-star and five-star moments that leave me confused and with whiplash. Here’s your Heroine: Not that she literally fights crime, but she’s described by her best friend like this: “… big boobs, small waist, big butt, long legs, amazon woman thing you have going on. Pair that package with your curly auburn hair and big hazel-green eyes.” So, naturally, she’s hideous. JOKES! She’s […]
