Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained

January 13, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

IN A WORLD, where a town of hot, single (and emotionally available) men are just waiting around for women to move there as a way to get their shit together……Maddie Moore has broken up with an abusive boyfriend and lost her job in LA. Her recently deceased mother left Maddie and her two (sequel fodder) estranged sisters shares of a run-down resort in Washington State. Maddie packs it up and heads to the resort to try and make a go of it and get her […]

Early CBR8 popularity front-runner?

January 5, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 5 Comments

I can see why they recommended this at SBTB: it’s a clever, succinct romance between two characters who share obvious charisma. The prose is witty and sophisticated, and Lucy Parker struck a remarkable balance in writing dialogue that demonstrated the characters’ intelligence while also remaining casual, which made everyone on the page seem much more realistic than I often encounter in contemporary romance. (This, in fact, is a hidden pet peeve of mine: authors bend over backwards to inject “cleverness” in banter between characters, but […]

Or, you can just go read Beth Ellen’s review.

January 5, 2016 by Ellepkay Leave a Comment

It was completely at random that Beth Ellen and I both read and reviewed this one so close together, and our takes on it are remarkably similar. This is a contemporary romance set in Chicago between two neighbors with a little bit of the hate to love theme. Ford is a journalist and Victoria a divorce attorney. Each are very good at their jobs and live for their work. They are both in their early thirties and don’t see themselves settling down with the typical […]

A ‘meh’ story – but with a *good* recommendation at the end

January 4, 2016 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

Plot: Sam Kirk and Delaney (Laney) Michaels have been best friends since they were 12 years old and are now ~30.   They co-started and own an extreme sports magazine and he lives in the apartment above hers. Laney has been in love with Sam for forever and he is a man-whore who loves her only as a friend while having many flings with women he does not take seriously. Laney goes on vacation with her sister’s family and decides that she wants to settle down […]

Here be dragons

December 26, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

Once again I want to thank the lovely Mrs. Julien, whose generous gift of an Amazon voucher made it possible for me to buy this book. NFL player Ethan “Dex” Dexter is known to his friends and team mates as “the Wise One”. He’s quiet, observant, focused on his career and not really concerned with dating, or really all that bothered about the fact that he’s still a virgin at 24. The only woman he’s interested in is the bubbly and vivacious Fiona Mackenzie, sister-in-law […]

Good sex, meh story, sloppy feminism

December 23, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

Over at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books, I recently read an interesting discussion about female sexuality and dating, and how well that is represented in the current climate of contemporary romance. One of the points of view discussed was that despite the explosion in popularity of online dating and, in particular, apps like Tinder that facilitate no-strings hookups, that scene is seldom portrayed in the genre. All too often, the heroine’s sex life before the hero is glossed over, minimized, or even laughably dismisssed, with authors […]
