The thing about recent Kevin Henkes books is that I do not see the illustration styles of Chrysanthemum, Owen or Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse anymore. What I have come to know as his style is gone. Therefore, I do not say, “THAT is a Kevin Henkes book” and I am no longer drawn to them. This is the worst alphabet book but an awesomely cool idea!
This is not your mothers alphabet book! This is not for a young child just learning their alphabet. This alphabet book could be given to an adult. I could also see this used in classes as low as second grade but upwards to junior high due to the items mentioned. It would be a great gift for someone who collects alphabet books. An Old theme told again
Pink Is for Boys has a theme (all colors are for everyone as well as flowers, rainbows, etc.) that is obvious from the time you look at the cover of the book. You see both a boy and girl painting with all the colors, and of course, pink is being colored by the boy and blue by the girl. By the end of the book the theme has become almost repetitive.
