A Rally Scoring story

Match Point! by Maddie Gallegos

June 28, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Match Point! by Maddie Gallegos is available but I was lucky enough to still have my online reader copy. However, there were a few places where a physical copy would have been welcomed. Things can be a bit crowded, though the images are a nice minimalistic approach, but are still giving you the extras illustrations have to move a story along.  The story is familiar, Rosie is a girl who does not like racquetball because of how her father pushes her into it, how he […]

Next stop: Healing

Next Stop: (A Graphic Novel) by Debbie Fong

June 25, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I assumed Next Stop: (A Graphic Novel) by Debbie Fong would be a funny a minute laugh out loud read/book. Now, while it has funny moments, it is actually a serious story about loss, love, friendship, family dynamics and coming of age. Therefore, you really can’t always judge a book by its cover.  The realistic, serious moments are relatable, thoughtful and even a bit educational. The humor is a nice balance to counter that. Then there is a bit of a supernatural element that you […]

Hair and Heart: An MM Fairy Tale Romance by Rhys Everly

Pictures of You by Leta Blake

Hair and Heart: An MM Fairy Tale Romance By Rhys Everly Val is in a conservatorship. He is a pop musician who has been under the care of his uncle since teenage Val blacked out during a psychotic episode and set fire to his home, which resulted in the death of both of his parents. Since that episode, he has been under his uncle Fred’s care. Val is in his early twenties and is tired of making the same generic pop ballads that made him […]

Cover of Cassandra at the Wedding. Stylised water colour pool with two redhaired girls swimming in opposite directions.

“From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes / I waited ages to see you there”

Cassandra at the Wedding (1962) by Dorothy Baker

I was going to make a few brief notes about this and then add this to my review roundup of the Monica Heisey and Curtis Sittenfeld books–and they sort of make a good triptych of more or less complicated women by women writers. But I ended up rambling a bit more about this one, and indeed, Cassandra of Cassandra at the Wedding is not so much complicated, or even messy, but a full on crucible of chaos and doubt and solipsism in human form, who […]

One curse, one family, a lifetime of growing up

Salt Magic by Hope Larson

April 30, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Salt Magic by Hope Larson and illustrated by  Rebecca Mock is an experience book. You read it, you have an experience. Mine is different from yours, and yours is different from the third guy’s reading. Things are if Alice in Wonderland met Wizard of Oz and something else…. I can’t put my finger on it. The artwork is the main character, though we are being told the story which is narrated, in text, by a young girl in the years right after World War I. […]

The Boy on the moon

Lunar Boy by Jes and Cin Wibowo

April 1, 2024 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I am starting my review of Lunar Boy with: I have questions. None are about the story itself, which is, a child from the Moon is adopted by a woman from New Earth. They live on a space station until the mother, in the process of helping her New Earth friend deal with the death of his wife, falls in love, marries, and moves to New Earth. Then, Indu (the child) must deal with not just the stress of a move to a new home, […]
