Bad a##, Kick a## and all around one damn good read

Suncatcher by Jose Pimienta

February 19, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Some plot point spoilers. I figured that Suncatcher would be about music and some sort of hard rock. Instead about being about “just music” it is about music (punk/hard rock/independent/and as it is set in Mexico, the cultural influences of the era), perfection, the obsessions we allow ourselves and the ghosts that haunt us. All the reviews I have seen seem to take the character Beatriz literally: her grandfather’s soul is literally trapped in his guitar; she is literally being haunted by him and the […]

Frank was great, the rest, shrug

Be Frank With Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson

February 8, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I was looking for an audiobook for my beast of a commute to work (an hour/hour 15 each way) and checked for an audie award winner and this one won for best female narrator and that was good enough for me! I knew diddly about it, but figured it would be something to pass the time, and to that end, I was correct. Well-written, interesting, and filled with fun characters it had all the markings of a good novel but I didn’t like some of […]

Out of Print, but should not be forgotten

Refresh, Refresh by Danica Novgorodoff

January 29, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Refresh, Refresh has come up on my radar several times. I was not interested as it looked like either a bloody fantasy with no point or another war book. A graphic novel would be an interesting take on either theme, but was I in the mood for it? In a recent grabbing of graphic novel covers catching my eye, I said, “Worse case I do not like and do not finish.” I had a feeling (though not sure why) it was about Vietnam. And it is […]

You’ll probably not be surprised but I liked this book a lot

Teen Titans: Raven by Kami Garcia

January 20, 2020 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

As you can imagine, I like ravens. I also like the idea of the character Raven from the Teen Titans. I do not consider myself an expert on the either subject. I just enjoy them. I like the element of mystery, cleverness and magic around them. And the character herself seems to have an interesting and unique path. With the graphic novel (ages at least 12 and up) Teen Titans: Raven Kami Garcia took a character comic and graphic novel lovers around the community know […]

a fine final read of 2019

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

December 31, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos 4 Comments

I first came across Little Women as a child, and I came across it out of order; we had an old cloth-bound copy of Jo’s Boys on the bookshelf in my childhood home. It was next to Treasure Island, which I had devoured, and being a child I assumed that since books were next to each other they must be related. Ooops! I quickly learned the error of my ways (thanks Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library!) and settled down with an old illustrated tome. I was Jo. Who wasn’t […]

not a series, but out of order none the less

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

December 31, 2019 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

My complaint against Conversations with Friends is wholly not the fault of the novel, the writer, or the characters within. My complaint is petty. I am being spoiled in lamenting that Conversations with Friends is not another Normal People. I know. It’s a wild assumption, I should know better, and the like- but Normal People was perfect. Conversations with Friends is a stepping stone on the path of Sally Rooney, and I wish that I had heeded a friend’s recommendation and read this one first! That being said, Conversations with Friends also worms a way into […]
