Even if you are not trans or nonbinary, you can learn about yourself, too.

The Out Side: Trans & Nonbinary Comics by David Daneman, The Kao, and Min Christensen

April 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The stories in The Out Side: Trans & Nonbinary Comics are by trans and non-binary people. Using their own words and images, the authors (mostly new to me) show us how they explored who they are. Some are new to finding themselves (one just found the words for their gender expression within the last year) and others have had years to explore.  Many times the style of their illustrations fits that (there is one woman who grew up in the 1970s and her style reflects […]

Awful Melodies but okay read

The Popularity Papers: Book Five: The Awesomely Awful Melodies of Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang by Amy Ignatow

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is my review for the graphic novel: The Popularity Papers: Book Five: The Awesomely Awful Melodies of Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang by Amy Ignatow Part of my issue with this book was that it is book five of the series, and it is not a series you can pick up in the middle of it. I find that if a book can stand alone, but still be a continuation, that is a good book/series. And while me the (physical) adult, could pick things up, […]

More than a broken heart

The Faint f Heart by Kerilynn Wilson

April 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Due to a few bumps in the story arc of The Faint f Heart, but particularly due to the artwork, this book is a 4.5 (rounded up to 5). This is a love story to emotions and feelings. It has realistic, science-fiction and fantasy vibes but is all too likely to happen scenario, or at least is within reason. When you play with the heart, emotions happen, and Kerilynn Wilson explores what happens when people find a way to stop feeling those emotions.   June […]

The Sparrow Girl

Pardalita by Joana Estrela

April 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport country The graphic novel Pardalita is slightly more sophisticated Heartstoppers, but with two female characters. Now, I am not saying that Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series is not sophisticated, or serious, but it has a lighter tone due to the differences in style. The graphic novel by Joana Estrela (and translated by Lyn Miller-Lachmann)  has sparse text and art that makes this a more artistic exploration of one girl and the crush she has on the title character. It is emotional with an oddly […]

Food, friendship, high school

Supper Club by Jackie Morrow

February 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport,(other format food as fiction story) If you want a teen graphic novel that is a funny, cute story of how food helps three friends deal with the ups and downs of being a senior in high school, a friend, and family member you need Supper Club.  Jackie Morrow’s story has one of those aged 10-to-14 feeling, but the subject matter is slightly on the older side (13/14 up). Still, I think a strong 10- to 12-year-old would be fine, as I am sure they […]

Old Magic in Not Too Old Times Past

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix

February 19, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Left Handed Booksellers of London sounds like an interesting premise, and thankfully one that gets pulled off reasonably well. One thing I will say right off is that it’s a lot more interesting if you know a little bit about British or Celtic folklore; I also think the 1980s setting doesn’t get enough attention and that’s a totally missed opportunity. In a lot of ways the story is pretty standard: country child comes to the big city to pursue an education and find the […]
