Coming of Age with Hurricanes and Ghosts and Jessie’s Girl

Joyland (Hard Case Crime) by Stephen King

December 27, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Given the book’s pulpy cover with a buxom redhead, I thought Joyland would be some kind of hard-boiled exploitationy romp. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s actually a quiet,  classic Stephen King-type coming of age story, albeit one for twenty-somethings instead of kids. The story swirls around events at an independent amusement park in 1970s North Carolina called Joyland. The park has a mysterious old owner, always impeccably dressed (I pictured Atlanta Falcons’ club owner Arthur Blank) with a twinkle in his eye. It […]

Young Love

March 18, 2018 by Halbs 1 Comment

The best way to explain myself as a person is to say that Raymond Chandler and Rainbow Rowell are two of my favorite writers. Chandler captures mood and cool so well, and Rowell captures growing up and heartbursts/breaks better than anybody that I can think of. Those are my two favorite things to read about. Cool people and normal people. (Does anyone have any recommendations combining Chandler and Rowell?) My first foray into the world of Rowell was Attachments because it was recommended by y’all Cannonballers. It […]

Enjoyable but underwhelming

April 23, 2017 by TheShitWizard 6 Comments

I keep seeing The Perks of Being a Wallflower pop up whenever paging through Netflix and spread throughout my Goodreads newsfeed. People seem to love it so my expectations were high, but while I definitely enjoyed it while reading, looking back come the end left me feeling distinctly underwhelmed. A coming of age novel, our protagonist is 15 year old Charlie, telling his thoughts and feelings on attending high school to an unknown reader through a series of letters. Shy and very naive, even so […]

Free For For Millionaires by Min Jin Lee

Great Expectations

April 19, 2017 by Gracey the Giant Leave a Comment

In Free Food for Millionaires, by Min Jin Lee, Casey Han, a Korean American immigrant in New York City, struggles with being an Americanized daughter in a traditional Korean household.  Unlike her younger sister, Tina, Casey fights against her parents’ expectations of her. For example, her parents, especially her mother, are devout Christians, but Casey enjoys casual sex and has even had an abortion.  And although Casey graduated from Princeton because it was what her parents wanted/expected, she still hasn’t decided what she wants to […]

Sweetness Follows is the best novel yet from Ciarán West

January 26, 2017 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

It takes a talented writer to inject new life in to the well worn coming of age genre. It so happens that Ciarán West is just that talented, and then some. He takes a shopworn concept and spins it into a 350 page story that moves by so quickly it’s over before you’ve had time to properly say goodbye to the characters. Sweetness Follows is a sequel to West’s previous novel The Boys of Summer. Don’t worry though, you don’t need to have read that […]
