I love everything about this.

May 12, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

I was a pretty big fan of the first Ms. Marvel starring Kamala Khan, but it seems now that Wilson has Kamala’s origin story out of the way, it’s really just time to have some fun. I LOVED this. Kamala is adorable. I love her stupid face. She’s sweet and funny and enthusiastic and deadpan and so determined. A lot of it is that Kamala is so young. She’s only sixteen and full of notions about what a superhero should be. She’s still learning her […]

The real first volume of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel run.

May 12, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

I may have shot myself in the foot with this one by reading out of order, and then again, maybe I didn’t. Confusingly, Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More is not actually the first volume of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run with Captain Marvel. This one is. And it’s in this volume that Carol Danvers, previously Ms. Marvel, swaps out her black leotard and thigh-highs for a sensible and badass red and blue costume and a blonde mohawk-type thing that sticks out of her […]

Completely ridiculous.

I would be dishonest if I said this volume wasn’t a bit of a letdown after how much I loved Higher, Faster, Further, More. I still love the art. I still love the characters. I still love the sense of humor. But the three stories that make up this particular volume were just so lightweight. Almost bordering on the absurd. One of these would probably have been okay, but three in a row knocked this down a star. I need a little bit of pathos with my […]

The honeymoon is over.

May 5, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

Shit, as they say, is getting real. Sex Criminals, Vol. 1 remains one of the funniest, sexiest, most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. That it’s a comic is only a plus. It would have been funny and sexy and touching if it was just words, but Suzie and Jon and their friends really come to life in the colorful, sometimes profane, artwork. (There are also some truly hilarious visual gags as well.) But if One Weird Trick was all about introducing Suzie and Jon and […]

Kate Bishop, superhero detective.

April 30, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Didn’t like this one as much as the previous ones, but not because of lack of Clint (although I did miss him), but more because I didn’t really like the bad guy in this one. This one entirely follows Kate in her adventures in L.A., but nothing happens like she thinks it will. When she gets there and tries to check in to her hotel, her card is declined, and her car repossessed. And the nice woman who helps her out and takes her to […]

Pizza dog is the best.

When you think “superhero comic,” nothing about what Matt Fraction is doing with Hawkeye will come to mind. The style alone with its limited color palette and cartoonish art (but in a wonderful, highly stylized way) is enough to set it apart. Each issue (for the most part) stands alone. Also for the most part, the concerns of this comic are not thwarting global domination or defeating bad guys with world-destroying powers or stopping galactic assholes from destroying the Earth. Nope, our two Hawkeyes (Clint […]
