Five stars for Kamala; two for this particular book.

November 24, 2015 by Halbs 3 Comments

This rating might surprise even the casual comic reader, as the Kamala Khan version of Ms. Marvel is generally lauded and respected as a fun character and a breath of fresh air. While I would give the charming Kamala (and her dad) five stars, I didn’t enjoy the slow storyline of volume one. I also don’t like the art in the book. Alphona is a definitely talented artist; I simply would’ve chose a different art style for the book (more like this or this). For those unfamiliar […]

The Last Chapter

November 17, 2015 by tillie Leave a Comment

When someone you love gives you Avatar; the last airbender you really know you’re good at picking people to love. Still the tv-show was over far too fast and it left a sadness in my life, like reading the last, final chapter of Harry Potter back when J.K Rowling actually had us convinced she’d never touch the story again. So when I got the Avatar; The Promise comics for Christmas I put them on my bookshelf and for many months enjoyed simply walking past them; knowing […]

Kate Beaton strikes again.

November 15, 2015 by narfna 4 Comments

I feel super bad about this review. Kate Beaton deserves my best words, because she is a wonderful, smart, creative genius who produces such sassy and perfect art. But I super read this in the middle of the night during a Read-a-thon, and other than remembering that I laughed frequently, loudly, and obnoxiously, I remember NOTHING about this book. I mean, the entirety of my oh so helpful Goodreads review after reading was, “This book wasn’t long enough.” THANKS A BUNCH, ASHLEY. If you aren’t familiar […]

Superman goes for a walk.

November 15, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve read a Superman comic, and this happened to be sitting next to Ms. Marvel when I went to pick it up at the library, so I checked it out. It was . . . interesting. It had the typical JMS positives and negatives. Some parts were great, and some parts were soooo not. Actually, the last time I read a Superman comic was the wedding issue, what, back in 1997? I think that might have been the last […]

Kamala gets crushed. Get it? It’s a pun.

November 12, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

I think Ms. Marvel might be my favorite ongoing comic. Wait, no, shit. I forgot about Saga for a second. Okay, so Ms. Marvel is probably my SECOND favorite comic, definitely my favorite superhero comic. I love Carol Danvers probably as much as I love Kamala Khan, but the last couple of Captain Marvel trades have fallen a little flat for me, and meanwhile G. Willow Wilson continues to absolutely KILL IT with Kamala. Volume 1 was Kamala’s origin story, Volume 2 was her getting comfortable with […]

Started from the bottom, now we’re here.

BOOM! Studios has a history of publishing books with amazing premises and sometimes disappointing execution. I have bought at least four of their titles, and three of them have been purchases that I regretted. Freelancers, however, is light-hearted fun from beginning to end. Val and Cassie, like a lot of twenty-somethings, are trying to grow their brand in L.A. Unlike the usual actors, writers, and bloggers, they’re freelance fixers/bodyguards/bounty hunters. It’s a different skillset, but one that they grew up developing. Chapter one lets you […]
