This was an overall interesting book full of conversations. It is not comedic itself but ABOUT comedy and the people who create it. So, if you’re going into the book expecting to laugh, you’re really setting both yourself and the book up for failure. This book isn’t for people looking for empty laughs, it’s for people looking to read sometimes very personal conversations about comedy behind the scenes, what it takes to do the work, how it effects comedians personally, what kind of person becomes […]
A Quick Must Read
Definitely the cutest book I’ve read this year. I had a smile on my face throughout the entirety of it. Run, don’t walk, to your local library or bookstore to read it. I really think it’d be enjoyable to graphic novel newbies as well as readers more versed in the genre. Nimona joins up as the sidekick to Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a vendetta against the kingdom’s current hero, Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin. Nimona is a complete joy to watch as she shapeshifts her […]
Hawkguy!
Hawkeye: Little Hits is a really weird book. The second collected, trade paperback of Matt Fraction’s run, this volume still has the everyman humor of the only not-super member of the Avengers. For the most part, the art is still the minimalist work it was in Volume 1, and the plot is still Hawkeye mostly dealing with personal problems instead of global threats. Trench poets breaking my heart
Every so often I come across a book and think, god I wish I was still in the classroom so I could get this book into the hands of kids. I think I’m going to email my friend who teaches reading and be all crazy about using this book, or parts of it, in her poetry unit. Where was this when I was trying to learn/understand/make meaning of poetry? Not even to get started about WWI Trench Poets and the passing of the 100th Anniversary […]
Score One For the Little Guy
Hawkeye. He’s not the lamest super hero to grace either our comic books or our screens, but he does take work. He’s a regular human being with high visual acuity and a bow and arrow. At one point in this comic, he points out that this is a neolithic weapon. Sure, it was a crucial part of any half decent army for thousands of years, but in a world with intercontinental ballistic missiles and machine guns, what good is an archer? Come to that, what […]
Servile Crocodiles
Imagine Romeo had horns and Juliet had wings and both were combatants in a never-ending galactic war. That’s reductive and unfair, but is the easiest way to describe the exquisite madness that is Saga, Vol. 1. Read the Rest on my blog: Pop Culture Penalty Box.
