Verity is No Rebecca

Verity by Colleen Hoover

July 24, 2021 by Leslie 1 Comment

It’s probably unfair to compare Verity (2018) to classics of the gothic such as Rebecca and Jane Eyre, but the parallels are unmistakable. A young woman finds herself enthralled with an older man who harbors a terrible secret concerning his wife. Isolated at his home, the heroine must discover the secret and save him while he, well, broods. Here, the protagonist is Lowen Ashleigh, a novelist who accepts a lucrative offer to complete the last two books of a successful series by Verity Crawford, who has been completely incapacitated […]

I’ve been reading a ton, but just don’t feel like writing, so here’s a review dump.

You'd Be Mine by Erin Hahn

Regretting You by Colleen Hoover

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

Reader, I’ve been reading a bunch of random books, with absolutely no direction in my life. Sitting at home and just trying to get out of my own head by getting into someone else’s. These are three of them. I liked some better than others, but they all had interesting bits. Here they are, in order of least favorite to most beloved. You’d Be Mine was a random Kindle download I picked up when the whole RWA thing blew up, and I had seen Erin […]

“So.” She drummed her fingers on the book. “You’re a grown man who still reads ghost and monster stories.”

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

The Whisper Man by Alex North

Verity by Colleen Hoover

A Cosmology of Monsters by Shaun Hamill

(4 stars) The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher Kingfisher tells us from chapter one that the dog (Bongo, best dog ever) and the narrator (Mouse, also quite enjoyable) will be okay at the end of the book. This is good, because I liked them both very much, and this book was SO CREEPY that I really needed some reassurances by the end. Mouse gets called up by her dying father to help with his dead mother’s estate — specifically, the big old house in the […]

New Adult Continues to be My Nemesis

November 9 by Colleen Hoover

October 29, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well I got lured into reading this book because I absolutely loved “Verity.” “November 9” was nonsensical though most of the book and when we get to the twist/reveal I was rolling my eyes. I am sorry, no one in the history of the world would be rooting on these two (Fallon and Ben) to get together. Also at times it felt like Hoover was slightly mocking “One Day” which I also didn’t like, but that was still better than two people only communicating/seeing each […]

For Fans of Jane Eyre and Rebecca

Verity by Colleen Hoover

October 22, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I don’t know what to say. This book really surprised me. Hoover hits on a great mix of themes from works like Jane Eyre and Rebecca to draw you in. Then you get a surprise ending that had me going what in the world and I wanted to dive back into the book all over again. I think that the first part of the book may start off a bit slow for readers, but by the time the heroine (Lowen) finds Verity’s autobiography you are […]

It Ends With…Me Not Enjoying This Book

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

February 18, 2019 by Rachel 3 Comments

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover Finished Feb. 17, 2019, took 2  days to read 2 Stars on Goodreads Genre: Romance Rating 8/8 for 2019 overall, 2/2 for Romance I really need to keep track of where I get my book recommendations because I would question the person or blog that suggested I read this book. Apparently, it is part of a genre called New Adult Romance (NA Romance), which seems to be well known on Goodreads. Instead of Young Adult, we have New […]
