What is the truth? **SPOILERS**

Verity by Colleen Hoover

December 16, 2022 by donttrustthe_bea 5 Comments

This was my first time, and probably last time, reading a Colleen Hoover book. I picked it up since so many people were raving about it, saying that Hoover’s psychological thrillers are much better than her normal fare. Well, I have thoughts about this book and…yeah, they’re mostly negative. This post will have spoilers, don’t read further if you are looking to read this book. Our protagonist is Lowen, a thirty-something single author who just recently lost her mother after a long batter with […]

How do you judge the virtues of a book?

Verity by Colleen Hoover

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

December 11, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

This book brings to mind the concept of “trash relativism” – the idea that while some books have greater literary merit (better writing, depth of themes, strong character development, etc) not everyone reads books for those literary reasons. A lot of people read just to escape, or share in a minor distraction with mild entertainment, and the quality of the writing just isn’t that important. And those are really valuable reasons to read a book. It feels relevant to bring this up in a discussion […]

Holy crap. This was not good.

Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

November 26, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This book was recommended to me by nobody. My BFF did recommend Colleen Hoover, but I think this may be one of her earlier books. Holy crap I did not like it. First of all, I listened to the audiobook, and the male narrator (Deacon Lee) had a voice or manner of speaking that kinda made my skin crawl? I’m not sure exactly what it was, but I did not like when he talked. Unfortunately, he talked for about half of the book. Which I […]

But Do We Know Anyone, Really?

Verity by Colleen Hoover

October 26, 2022 by Jake 3 Comments

Read this as part of CBR14 Bingo: hot. Colleen Hoover is the hottest writer out there right now. (Zoolander movie voice) That Colleen Hoover is so hot right now. Seriously, I keep hearing her name in book circles (is that the same Colleen who writes historical fiction? No that’s McCullough), seeing her books literally EVERYWHERE (this one I kept getting confused with the popular and similarly titled YA historical thriller “Code Name Verity”) and getting recs from my friends to a random sex worker whose […]

Wild Ride

Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

February 4, 2022 by Claudia 2 Comments

Y’all this was wild. It felt like getting wine drunk and watching a lifetime movie and you have to yell at the tv. Was it entertaining? Yes. Was it entertaining to me the way I think the creator intended? Ummm…….. So in Ugly Love we have a story in two parts. The first part follows Tate, a woman who moves in with her pilot brother and gets involved in a sexual relationship with the man next door. The man, Myles, tells her he can’t and […]

Reminders of Him

Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover

January 24, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

I don’t know. This book just made me shake my head. The love story is not between the characters of Ledger and Kenna. Instead it’s between Kenna and Scotty. And due to how Hoover allows us to see Kenna and Scotty’s relationship, it felt more real and believable to me than whatever this mess was between Ledger and Kenna. I just didn’t buy it. Also when we are finally told about “that night” I called BS on a few things and it didn’t make […]
