Edinburg by Alexander Chee CBR15: Sex True fact, when someone British asked me what I was reading I pronounced this “Edin-BERG” and to their credit they didn’t laugh but instead asked, with some horrified sincerity, if that’s how Americans say it. It’s not! At least, not on purpose. It’s just how can the English language claim to have been invented in a country that seems to not have grasped even a shred of understanding of how the various letters in it work? I digress. This is […]

Mr. Willoughby Rides Again

The Late Mrs. Willoughby (Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney, #2) by Claudia Gray

October 19, 2023 by narfna 4 Comments

I enjoy this series so much. There’s just something so pleasurable about watching a talented author who knows Jane Austen’s work in all the right ways play around in that world and with those characters, and then add in a well-executed murder mystery on top of that and I’m gonna be happy no question. This is like, the essence of good fanfic, except it’s polished, professionally published fanfic (hence my shelf name). So last time we had Mr. Wickham getting his just desserts, and this […]

“We might be useful, but we shall most certainly be improper.“

The Late Mrs. Willoughby by Claudia Gray

May 5, 2023 by Emmalita 8 Comments

I am enjoying Claudia Gray’s Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney mystery series so much. This second outing in the Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney mysteries feels heavier than the first. In The Murder of Mr. Wickham, the victim was one of Jane Austen’s least sympathetic characters. I certainly don’t advocate for murdering people, but Mr. Wickham’s violent demise did not cause distress. In The Late Mrs. Willoughby, we get no such comfort. Mrs. Willoughby may not be the nicest or most charming person, but she is […]

Does what it says on the tin. #CBRBINGO – Snake

The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray

November 2, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

The short, spoiler-free version: Two thumbs up, very fun. Surprisingly angsty. Does justice to murder mysteries and to Jane Austen. The longer, mostly spoiler-free version (spoils the premise and which characters are in the book from the Jane Austen canon): But where is Elinor?? I am disappointed that she only merits a couple of mentions in this book when we are in Marianne’s POV, but maybe Claudia Gray just doesn’t love her as much as I do. That’s pretty easy to do, I guess, because […]

Didn’t even read past “austen murder mystery” in the blurb

The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray

June 5, 2022 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Claudia Gray, of Bloodline, here stretches her fandom writing chops to a different world long, long ago with many fervent fans: Austen! The premise is simple: all the characters you know and love from Austen’s greatest hits also know one another. A sort of Extended Austen Universe, so to speak. Everyone has showed up to Donwell Abbey, the house of Emma and George Knightley, for a garden party that quickly sours when there are two unwelcome guests: a torrential rainstorm and Mr. George Wickham. Everyone […]

He Had it Coming

The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray

April 29, 2022 by Emmalita 10 Comments

George Wickham is the most notorious predator in Jane Austen’s oeuvre. Have you read Courtney Milan’s analysis of Pride and Prejudice, “Pride and Predators”? You should. For a non-violent person, I am sure am ok with the murder of a fictional character. When I saw the title, The Murder of Mr. Wickham, I did a little mental fist pump and said, “yes!!” So, I was predisposed to enjoy this. Gray has chosen to make her two primary POV characters, Juliet Tilney and Jonathon Darcy. Juliet is […]
