Big Brother is watching Part Two

1984: The Graphic Novel by George Orwell and Fido Nesti

November 11, 2025 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

When I saw the cover for 1984: The Graphic Novel adapted by Fido Nesti, I thought I would enjoy reading George Orwell’s book this way. I requested it via interlibrary loan. I did mention that there was another one done by  Matyás  Namai,, but I would prefer Nesti. So, what did I get? Both! I started with Namai’s just because it was due first. After reading it, I was not impressed by the style. It was too busy. Yet, it was an experience I was […]

Big Brother is watching Part One

George Orwell's 1984: The Graphic Novel by George Orwell and Matyas Namai

November 11, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Even though I was an English major in college, my contemporary classic reading was minimal. Going to a small school meant I repeated professors and they repeated the authors and texts they liked, therefore I did not always get the most expansive exposure to a variety of classics. Because of this 1984 missed my radar. When I found free time for reading, the classics never appealed to me for two reasons. The first, the language was not contemporary and therefore was lofty. It was not […]

Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: a Classic mystery

November 1, 2025 by katie71483 3 Comments

Hi, Classic! Thanks so much for agreeing to participate in our interview! I see from your Cannonball Read profile that you’ve been participating in and off since CBR 9. How did you find us? I used to post on Pajiba, and reading Pajiba Love, I saw that there were often book reviews and I started to read the reviews that were linked. There were more CBR commenters back in those days, and I think it was Ms. Julien who told me about CBR and how […]

Nancy D goes 21st century

he Secret of the Old Clock: A Nancy Drew Detective Story by Marci Kay Monson and Ryan Wheatcroft

October 8, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who used to read the Nancy Drew books? There are the originals, reissues, and adaptations for all ages. The first book was about an old clock mystery. I read it back in the day, but was more of a Hardy Boy fan and never read too many Nancy’s adventures. Yet, when I had the opportunity to get an online copy of  The Secret of the Old Clock: A Nancy Drew Detective Story by Marci Kay Monson and illustrations by Ryan Wheatcroft (due later April 2026), […]

All around us are people, of all classes, of all nationalities, of all ages

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

September 30, 2025 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

CBR 17 BINGO: Border, because the murder takes place just after the train passes over the Yugo-Slavian border, resulting in there being no local police onboard. Also, the collection of guests on the train cross many borders into many different nationalities. Last year I received a beautiful Folio Society edition of Murder on the Orient Express for Christmas and have been waiting for just the right time to re-read this mystery. When I planned a train trip across the Canadian Rockies, I knew the time […]

Cover of James by Percival Everett noting it is a Pulitzer Prize finalist

“Those little bastards were hiding out there in the tall grass.”

James by Percival Everett

April 27, 2025 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

I heard from multiple people that James was THE BOOK to read last year, and it was on a lot of best of lists, so I was exicted to give it a read. It fully hooked me from the first sentence “Those little bastards were hiding out there in the tall grass.” I didn’t have a lot of expectations about this book, but having me chuckle from the start was a surprise. This is a retelling of the classic tale Huck Finn but from the […]
