A solid mystery/thriller set in Wales.

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 4/30 This got better as it went. I’m glad, because up until a key reveal over halfway through the book, I was pretty emotionally uninvested in what was going on. There so many point of view characters! Too many, I think. Made it a lot harder to get invested. Also, I much prefer mysteries where the people solving the crimes discover things, instead of us as readers discovering them via flashback, which is mostly what happens here. […]

A Wales of a Time

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

December 21, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

When you have a reputation for loading your book with twists and turns, it can make for a less pleasant reading experience for the reader because their sense are heightened and they know all the tricks. Still, I was legitimately surprised at the way Clare Mackintosh’s The Last Party broke, both for the twist and for the reveal of the killer. The setup made me roll my eyes: two people who slept together on New Years Eve don’t realize the other is a cop and are assigned […]

Hold On Tight

I Let You Go by Clare MacKintosh

Note: I’m not going to spoil this book but I am going to give away something about the plot machinations regarding this book. If you want to go into this book tabula rasa, skip this review (and really, all reviews because I have no doubt they will inevitably mention what I’m about to mention). If you don’t mind knowing something specific with regards to the plot, even though it is not at all a spoiler, read on. Nest… …   There’s nothing I hate more […]

The Last Party

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

November 14, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Trigger warning: Rape Well this is a new series by Clare Mackintosh. I have either loved or just being meh/okayish about her books. I was glad that this one had an interesting main character that we apparently are going to follow through three books. I enjoyed DC Ffion Morgan and loved how her past experience with the man who is murdered comes full circle by the ending of this one. The man who is murdered, Rhys Lloyd, is a villain you are going to want […]

The Perfect Crime (Helen Fields) *** Stephen Berry is having a rough night. Or a rough life, really; he cannot seem to get his bipolar disorder under control and his long-suffering girlfriend has left him. Desperate for some quiet, he intents to jump off a bridge, but a suicide counsellor who happens to be nearby intervenes. Stephen is quietly grateful, but then his body is found dead a few weeks later at the bottom of a tall tower. The cause of death seems like a […]

A Thriller with Real Weight

I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh

September 9, 2022 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Question I chose Clare Mackintosh’s I Let You Go for the Question square because I was interested in who the “you” was in the title. The question was answered on several levels in this excellent novel I never want to read again. I Let You Go opens with the tragic death of five-year-old Jacob, who is killed in front of his mother in a hit and run. The narrative alternates between the detectives trying to track down the killer and Jenna, who has […]
