On the Corner of Chocolate Avenue: How Milton Hershey Bought Milk Chocolate to America by Tziporah Cohen

Milloo's Mind: the Story of Maryam Faruqi, Trailblazer for Women's Education by Reem Faruqi

This is the first year I do not have a nephew in school. I have three cousins who are still going (one who is a junior or senior in high school, one almost in high school and one almost (or is) junior high), but it is not the same. Do I feel old? A little, but because I am mostly young at heart, and I can read picture books, I can still think I am that kid reading 100 books for summer reading challenges and […]

Chocolate, Cross-dressing, Murder, and More!

The Spanish Daughter by Lorena Hughes

January 24, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Puri and her husband Cristóbal are on their way to Ecuador, where Puri is to claim a chocolate plantation that has been left to her, when her husband is murdered by the assassin sent for her. Determined to avenge him, Puri assumes Cristóbal’s identity and goes to the plantation, where a trio of secret siblings is but the first of the surprises… I was immediately intrigued by this book, because I’d never read anything with such a plot. Yet despite the intricacy of the premise, […]

I want to wrap myself up in this book cover and live happily ever after.

LOOK at how beautiful this book by CL Polk is. I want this pattern in pjs and sheets and a phone case. It is just so pretty. Plus, it sounds amazing and I can’t wait to read it. I’ve had Whiteout on my TBR for a while and will crack it open to start off CBR13. The chocolate is delicious and I am hiding it from my kids. Thank you, Emmalita. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!!

Want Chocolate? Get a Monkey.

No Monkeys, No Chocolate by Melissa Stewart

February 5, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you know how chocolate is made? It is made by monkeys. No, really! Melissa Stewart and Allen Young say so in No Monkeys, No Chocolate. Let me explain about how this book shows you that. There are three parts of the book: The first is the basic story about how cocoa beans become chocolate. The second part is a paragraph underneath it is simple sentence going into more detail about that creature or plants role in creating cocoa trees/cocoa beans. Finally, the third part […]

There is No Life I Know to Compare with Pure Imagination

March 18, 2018 by Ellesfena 9 Comments

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of those books that was incredibly important in my formative years. My parents are both former schoolteachers, and firm believers in the importance of reading aloud to kids. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is my dad’s favorite kids’ book, so it stands to reason that this was one of the many books he chose to read to me when I was little. As an adult I have realized that it is not just the books I read as […]

Take a Whisk to a Gun Fight

January 3, 2018 by TyburnBlossom 1 Comment

I’m so angry at this book. Let me back up and start with all the amazing things this book has going for it. Let’s start with the description that first got my attention: black lesbian steampunk cozy mystery. For real, what’s not to love about that? How about that it’s set in an alternate history where there was no Civil War? Instead of the Civil War, there was a successful slave rebellion that led to the end of slavery in America? How about a late […]
