“Hope, because that is what we must give him, what we must give all of them. Hope and guidance and a place to call their own, a home where they can be who they are without fear of repercussion”

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

June 15, 2021 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

It’s rare that I say everyone should read a particular book, but this is a book everyone, of all ages, should read.  TJ Klune has spun a beautiful story in The House in the Cerulean Sea.  It’s about finding one’s place in the world, learning to re-write the narrative others have placed on one’s self, that bigotry and fear can be overcome, and that acceptance can be found, starting sometimes as small as with one person to then slowly grow. Linus Baker is an investigator […]

Tales from the Eloise omnibus, part 2: Moscow is full of black caviar from the Caspian Sea and spies

Eloise in Moscow by Kay Thompson (author), Hilary Knight (illustrator)

February 23, 2021 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Following on the heels of Eloise at Christmastime is the re-read of Eloise in Moscow.  Eloise has come to Moscow in style, riding in the Rolls Royce her grandmother had sent because, “you only go to Moscow once”.  She is accompanied by Nanny, Weenie (the dog), but Skipperdee  (the turtle) develops a nervous cough and is sent by diplomatic pouch back to the Plaza hotel in NYC.  No reason is given for the visit beyond vague mention of Eloise being a diplomat child and once again her […]

Tales from the Eloise omnibus, part 1: The tiny terror with a heart of gold

Eloise at Christmastime by Kay Thompson (author), Hilary Knight (illustrator)

I grew up loving Eloise, a precocious brat with a charmed life, living to the fullest of her (mostly) unsupervised life.  However, I was unaware that there were multiple Eloise books until I worked at Border Books (RIP) corporate headquarters and had the amazing job of overseeing the free book room.  I did other stuff too but that was the best part of my job.  One day The Ultimate Edition of Eloise came through the room and I was surprised to find out there are […]

Nostalgic favorite brought lovingly into a new format

Kristy's Great Idea: The Baby-Sitters Club by Raina Telgemeier, based on Ann M. Martin's novel

January 8, 2021 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

My youngest, 9, does not care to read chapter books and so she isn’t interested in reading the same things her older sister did at the same age.  However, she loves reading in comic form, be it manga, comics, or graphic novels.  So the challenge is to find her new reading material.  She loves Raina Telgemeier so I decided to take a chance on Raina’s graphic novel adaptation of Ann M. Martin’s Kristy’s Great Idea, book one of The Baby-Sitters Club series.  I was a […]

Charming picture book about a night time library for animals

The Midnight Library by Kazuno Kohara

January 6, 2021 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

My mom is continually sending our family books, despite my insistence our bookshelves are overflowing!  For Christmas she sent The Midnight Library and though it is aimed at children younger than my own, she knew what she was doing because the 13 and 9 year old were both charmed by the story. The Midnight Library is a love letter to librarians, libraries, and the purpose they serve in the community.  The titular library opens at midnight and closes at dawn.  It is run by a little […]

The reviews I forgot to post, part 2!

Unplugged and Unpopular by Mat Heagerty, Tintin Pantoja, and Mika Amante

December 30, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I heard about this book at Comic Con (or Book Con, I can’t remember.)  It’s the story of a middle school girl, Erin Song, who loses her technology privileges and can suddenly see aliens!  Erin is not the most popular kid in school, so when the popular girl in her class asks her to help her cheat on a quiz, Erin agrees.  But then she gets caught, and her parents take away all of her screen time – phone, laptop, tablet, tv, and video games.  […]
