We care too much, or not enough

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood

November 29, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

It feels weird putting these two in the same review, but there you have it. I’ve been struck by the dreaded reading slump.  The Plot (Jean Hanff Korelitz) ** The plot of The Plot: author Jacob is struggling. His first novel made a modest impact, but didn’t sell well despite positive reviews. His second novel went ignored entirely. To make ends meet, Jacob teaches writing to a group of wannabes and one of them tells him the plot of a novel he is planning to […]

“If the hair was found, other parts of themselves might be recoverable too.”

The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood

May 25, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Two young women, Yolanda and Verla, awake in dingy cells with no memory of how they got there. Slowly waking from their drugged sleep, they realise they are not alone. Ten girls in all, shepherded into the Outback, surrounded by an electrified fence, watched over by menacing guards. And no way out. Their hair shaved and heads covered by bonnets, they’re forced to do hard labour in the sweltering sun. Eventually they come to realise why they are there – each of them has been […]

Look it’s not Mad Max even if people say it is

February 28, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Stop trying to make this book be Mad Max; it’s not going to happen. No one is I realize, but there’s an embarrassing blurb on the back of the book that makes that reference. Instead, this book is about two women who vaguely recognize themselves waking up, chained, wreaked, and imprisoned in an Outback stronghold. They don’t like each other. It’s an imprisonment novel, but it’s not a captive horror movie genre type novel. This isn’t torture porn, luckily, and it’s not that ONE SCENE […]

Fearsome Women

September 2, 2016 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

It’s hard to miss the stories in the news these days involving men sexually assaulting or abusing women, getting a slap on the wrist, and then the women being put through hell for speaking up about their assault. The women get blamed — she was drunk, she was known to sleep around, why was she with that/those guy(s) anyway, she’s a gold digger, etc. We’ve also seen many stories over the years about married men having affairs, being contrite and then the other woman being […]
