Paper-Thin Premise

The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

August 6, 2019 by KatSings 2 Comments

Bingo Update: This is my YOUTHS! square, as it was not only published as YA, but feels pretty stereotypical of the genre as a whole, and not in a good way. The Paper Magician ostensibly takes us on the journey of our protagonist, Ceony (whose name I never figured out how to pronounce and still don’t really like) as she learns the magic of paper. In this universe, the magically inclined are bonded to a specific material, and then that is the only form their magic can […]

Magic! Paper Dogs!

October 17, 2017 by Rachie3879 Leave a Comment

Reading an incredibly disappointing novel, for me, makes me long for something simple and easy. Luckily, the book I’d chosen from all the ones waiting on my Kindle was perfect for that. Charlie Holmberg’s The Paper Magician is the first in a series of fantasy novels about a young apprentice magician, Ceony Twill. Ceony has just finished her studies at the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined; much to her chagrin she has been assigned an apprenticeship with a paper magician. Ceony had always […]

I Enjoyed the Ranting a lot more then the book

February 23, 2017 by melanir 2 Comments

And so I pushed through the second book in this trilogy. I am still less than impressed, but because my expectations were so low, this one wasn’t quite as bad as the first. Which means this is proves the theory that lowered expectations make things better. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it’s still terrible it just didn’t disappoint me in addition to being terrible so… yea… For the record, I skimmed a lot, a LOT, of this book. So what’s the plot? Well, Lira’s evil […]

Wrath and Frustration or Austen Mishandled

September 5, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

If you read The Paper Magician, get ready to feel wrath and frustration. Ceony Twill is quite possibly the most irritating heroine I’ve read in a long time and I really want to strangle her. I’ll probably settle for getting this book away from me as soon as I can. Ceony is a know-it all, she’s selfish, she’s immature, and she refuses to learn from her mistakes. True she’s had some problems in her life, but as her flashbacks show, a lot of them are […]
