“No one had ever held my hand before. Somehow people in Texoma always needed their hands free. I found it a little hot, a little sweaty, and since we were yoked we had to match our pace. But it made me feel good.”

A Longer Fall (Gunnie Rose #2) by Charlaine Harris

February 10, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Charlaine Harris (she of the Tru Blood series) knows how to write a breezy entertaining romp, not quite a “can’t put down” page-turner, but a book you are happy to go back into in a world that has interesting magical elements. Her characters can be a bit wooden and two-dimensional, but synonyms for that could be familiar and comforting. Her writing is straightforward and easy to read, with violence and a bit of sexy sprinkled throughout, the type of book that I would qualify as […]

“My whole life I had hated the magic world. I knew grigoris were unreliable and dangerous, if not outright evil. Now I was surrounded by the very thing I hated. But I’d gotten myself into this fix. I had to get myself out.”

An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris

In one word: Surprising Cannonball Read Bingo: Rec’d At the last Cannonball Read Zoom, we did the ol’ “what are you reading” merry-go-round, and our fearless organizer, MsWas mentioned this book. I read and enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series and as recommenders go, she’s got high marks so I immediately put this one on the reserve list at the library. Firstly, look at this cover? Young lady gunslinger? YES PLEASE. I was excited from page one and this book held my attention and enthusiasm almost […]

A rare case in which the TV show is better (for a time)

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

April 2, 2021 by Mobius_Walker 2 Comments

If you’ve seen the HBO Show True Blood, then you know the plot of Dead Until Dark. Vampires are real and everyone knows about them. Sookie Stackhouse wants to meet a vampire desperately, but she’s just a waitress at a small bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana where nothing exciting ever happens. The only thing that keeps things interesting/challenging for Sookie is that she can read minds. Other than that, her life is boring: she goes to work, she goes home to her home where she lives with […]

I’d been waiting for the vampire for years when he walked into the bar.

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

Dead Until Dark – 4/5 Stars It’s impossible to read this book and not think of the show. So I will be reading this book and thinking about the show. The main reasons for this impossibility involve a)I have seen like 6 seasons of the show and it is by far the way I think about these characters, this setting, and these stories. b) The show is clearly a very solid adaptation of the books, at least this first one. c) There are some reasonable […]

CBR Diversions – Dream Casting

June 26, 2020 by teresaelectro 20 Comments

As a lover of all things pop culture, I love to read and watch book adaptations on the big and small screen. I first saw HBO’s True Blood series before absolutely devouring the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse books. Same for The Golden Compass, which was panned by critics, but led to me reading the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. The screen versions captivated me and I simply had to know the literary origins of the characters. When I read a particularly engaging novel, […]

Another rather forgettable Harris book

Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris

December 12, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Official book description: Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town. There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his […]
