She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes in shape no bigger than an agate stone on the forefinger of an alderman…or at least that’s what Simon LeBon told me.

January 31, 2017 by scootsa1000 11 Comments

My interest in Shakespeare came from watching a Duran Duran video when I was in the 8th grade. The song was Waiting for the Nightboat, and watching it led me to reading Romeo & Juliet for the first time. Who was this Queen Mab? And why was Simon LeBon so afraid of her? Junior High me needed to know. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ09HcvYQTY&w=560&h=315] All of this came back to me while listening to my Audible boyfriend James Marsters read Summer Knight to me last week. In the fourth installment […]

The Raven & The Hellcat

January 30, 2017 by Mikki Blu 3 Comments

I enjoyed the first book in this series a lot, but found the second one here lacking somewhat.  Our heroine, Heloise, is the sister for Nicolas from the first book.  She’s a codebreaker, working to decipher documents for the government so she’s portrayed as a smart young woman.  She’s convinced no one will ever marry her, since she has a scar on her forehead from an incident in her youth.  Her secret vice is naughty underthings, since her mother taught her that ‘you never know […]

Makes me want to go to the South of France

January 30, 2017 by Malin 2 Comments

Malorie Monsard returns to the south of France, where she grew up, having left on a hike after finishing high school and made enough money in Paris to put herself through business school. Having felt like an outcast while growing up, due to the legacy of her great-grandfather who betrayed resistance members to the Gestapo, and a narcissistic father who would manipulate her, her mother, her sisters and her grandmother, and charm, lie and steal his way until he finally met an unglamourous end in […]

No rogues here, just a boring tale

January 27, 2017 by Mikki Blu 5 Comments

Well, I’ve not read anything by Mary Jo Putney before, so this was an impulse grab at the library.  It turned out to be a bad choice – it was a bit of a dud.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to finish it or not, but I skimmed through parts of it just to get through it.  The plots (there’s more than one going on) seemed predictable, and the characters weren’t that memorable.  The hero wasn’t a rogue in the least, either, so […]

Need a Hero? El Deafo To the Rescue!

January 27, 2017 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Well, I couldn’t have chosen a better book to raise my spirits in these trying times. Cece Bell’s Newbery Honor-winning graphic novel is pitched toward kids but will entertain and educate anyone who picks it up. El Deafo is Bell’s account of losing her hearing but finding her power in her childhood. I am the parent of two special needs kids, one of whom wears a hearing aid, and I found myself saying, “wow, I never thought of that,” as Bell recounts what it was […]

I don’t know if I liked the book or not, but I’d definitely see the movie.

January 27, 2017 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

Sometimes, when you read a book, you can’t help but picture the story in your head, almost as if it were a movie. And sometimes, you get the feeling that a book was pretty much written so that it could eventually become a movie. That’s not a knock against the writers who produce books like that really. I just feel like some books are written so that they can someday be watched instead of read. And I fell like The Sisters Brothers is one of […]
