The Seedier Side of Regency London

April 19, 2017 by Mikki Blu 4 Comments

This is the first book in the historical mystery series set in the time period of great unrest in Britain. King George III has gone mad and his son is about to be proclaimed Prince Regent, hence the Regency Period.  As the book opens, Ms Harris sets a mysterious tone with a description of murky yellow fog on the streets of London, wrapping around a  young woman’s lantern in wraithlike drifts as she heads toward an old church for a rendezvous. Who is she meeting…the answer is unclear […]

I miss you, Secretariat.

Two or three years ago, while we were on vacation in The Berkshires, we spent a day at the Norman Rockwell museum. It was great. We learned a ton about Rockwell and his life and walked around the gorgeous property where he painted. As an added bonus, there was a special exhibit on display, featuring all (or at least a lot) of Edward Hopper’s Cape Cod paintings. This was particularly eye-opening, as I really didn’t know much about Hopper other than that he painted Nighthawks. […]

The Duke of Dark Secrets

April 18, 2017 by Mikki Blu 1 Comment

Much like Eloisa James’ book Seven Minutes in Heaven, this one deals with a lord in search of a governess for children he’s unprepared to deal with.  This is a favorite of mine that I decided to re-read after thinking there were a lot of similarities between the two, and I have to say this book is much better. The Duke of Denford is one of those unexpected aristocrats – several members of his family succumbed to accidents or illnesses, and he is the last surviving […]

Ice sculpting with a chainsaw, world-class desserts and special ops soldiers with a book club

April 17, 2017 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars This is the third book in a series, and while you can read each of these books completely independently of each other, this book references an pretty significant event in the previous book, Chase Me, and readers who want more details may want to check that book out first (it’s also the better romance of the two). Be aware that I spoil part of the plot of that one in the very first paragraph of this review, though. Lina Farah has had to […]

Toxic masculinity and misogyny given free reign

April 17, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

Todd Hewitt lives in a community peopled only by men, and has one month left until he too becomes one. All the men are afflicted with something called “the Noise”, meaning they can hear each other’s thoughts, all the time, all over town. There were women in the community once, but they didn’t survive the infection that brought the noise. Todd’s mother was one of the last women to die, while Todd was still a baby. While Todd and his dog, Manchee, are out walking […]

I wanted to love this. But I just couldn’t bring myself past feeling lukewarm.

This book was practically a sure thing for me. It has an adorable little porcupine on the cover. I can’t resist! I mean, LOOK AT HOW CUTE THAT IS. It also has a blurb from my Cannonball boyfriend, Andrew Smith. Just reading the words ANDREW SMITH is like catnip to me. Seriously, I was destined to love this book. But I just didn’t. And I don’t really get why. Carson is uprooted from his life in NYC for a summer in Billings, Montana, against his will. His father (who abandoned him […]
