You’d have expected me to be just a minor character in this saga

April 29, 2017 by borisanne Leave a Comment

This is a tough one to review. I really liked reading it, but in the end, it felt as though the exposition was finally wrapped up, and now I was ready for the story. But actually, the book was over. Not that there isn’t enough movement in Eileen, it’s just that the narrator tells us very early in the book that this is the story of her final days trapped in her terrible and sad life as she was raised – or more accurately, grew […]

The ultimate Rake and Wallflower story

April 28, 2017 by Malin 1 Comment

Shy, stuttering and normally rather timid Evangeline “Evie” Jenner shows up on the doorstep of notorious rake and scoundrel, Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent with a somewhat surprising proposition. Evie knows Sebastian is desperate for money, after all, not two weeks earlier, he tried to abduct and indicated that he would quite happily compromise one of Evie’s best friends, mainly because Lillian was a rich heiress. Evie is also due to inherit lots of money and rather sooner than Lillian, as her father is at death’s […]

I feel like this was a massively missed opportunity to really open up some important discussions. But I don’t know how I would change it.

Ok. So. I know this book has been talked about a lot lately, and that the Netflix show is getting a lot of attention — both positive and negative. The middle school sent a note home to all parents warning us about the intensity of the show, and that if our kids wanted to watch it that we should watch with them and then have a dialogue about what we saw. Fine. I know bunnybean’s friends have been watching, so I figured I’d see what […]

My First Hate Post

April 27, 2017 by Caitycat 2 Comments

Save Ugh, this book was gross. It’s just so mean and hateful, like a rabid squirrel. The outside may seem cheerful and harmless, but get to know it and it’ll bite you. It’s the story of a girl named Anna who is fat. Being fat is the worst thing ever, obviously. After her parents divorce, Anna moves away from her home in Ohio to New York. She gets a job with a caterer, who she refers to as MFG (My Fairy Godmother), who helps her […]

Death by Stiletto

April 27, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

There are two kinds of people in LA. Those who do lunch. And those who eat lunch. Those who do lunch talk to their agents and order things like ahi tuna and Chinese chicken salad. Those who eat lunch talk to a clown and order extra ketchup for their fries. This is another of those “cozy” mystery books, something I downloaded for Overdrive when I wanted a quick read.  The cover appealed to me, being the shoe addict that I am!  It’s book four in […]

The novel we deserve

April 27, 2017 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

American War is the most timely and poignant novel I’ve read in years. Grim from the first chapter, this isn’t a novel that will make you cry, but it sure as hell will make you despair. Set in 2075, the America of this future has been torn apart by a second Civil War. Three Southern states have broken off from the Union in order to maintain the freedom to use fossil fuels, which have been banned by the Union due to the devastation they have wrought on the continent. […]
